Tortoises don’t like dark colors

Tortoises often attack dark objects like black shoes because they mistake them for rival tortoises invading their territory. Males are especially territorial and will ram or bite what they perceive as competitors—the dark color + size resembles another tortoise from their low view.
It can also trigger defensive instincts tied to dark-colored predators (snakes, crows) that target eggs or young.
They’re not blind and have good color vision. This is evolved, purposeful behavior—not random or accidental. Observations strongly support the territorial explanation, though dedicated studies are limited.
