I was surprised to learn how poor these places paid before I looked a few months ago, but that is true according to Glassdoor. You have McDonalds advertising 12 bucks an hour. Can’t imagine how shitty working at an oil change place in the summer heat must be.

Every single store and restaurant has a now hiring sign. They are all short staffed. Going to have to offer more money to get people which is why McDonald’s is paying 10-12.

I don’t shop for oil and filters I know exactly what to get. I put it on our grocery list and whichever one of us goes to the store for groceries picks it up while we’re there. And my local Walmart takes the old oil. I just back up to the place that you pour the old oil into a container and a barrel that you toss the old oil filter into. I’ve just had too many screw ups letting someone else change my oil. One of my vehicles has to have a specific grade or it will damage the engine and I have caught them putting in the wrong grade. To the point that one time it destroyed my engine. So 10 minutes of my time to change my oil and to check the other fluid levels and a quick visual inspection is worth it.

He could give me his daughter for free and he’d come out way ahead after just a few months.

If you're a vet like me you can get 25% off at 5 minute oil change! And if you're a vet and opt to do it yourself, O'Reillys gives you 10% off your purchase.

You realize unless you pay for the better oil, all you are getting is recycled shite, and a new filter right? That recycled shite is from all the people that do their own oil changes regularly, plus all the sludge these oil change places send in. Then they filter it out, and it goes right back into your vehicle.

I worked at a well known parts store back in the day and the poors changed their oil once every five days.

And by change the oil I mean the hooptie leaked a quart a day and instead of fixing the leak, usually just a $3.99 oil pan or valve cover gasket, they would just pour a 79 cent quart of house brand in each day.

Having to dispose of the oil etc.

I change the oil and filters in my 3 vehicles, a Camry, Silverado and Kawasaki Nomad motorcycle. It's not really all that hard to do, but I do need a floor jack for the Toyota since it sits so low to the ground.

As for disposing of the oil, there is a service station with a great couple mechanics between the owner and his helper and he lets me put my oil in his big in-ground tank. Depending on how oil prices are, he sometimes gets paid by the company to remove his old oil and sometimes he has to pay.

I'll dispose of my peanut oil from frying turkeys and all my motor oil at his place.

I use to own a 89 Ford Ranger, 5 speed, straight six. Took a Ford FL1A oil filter. I could change the oil in less than 10 minutes. Damn I miss that little truck.

I've had good luck with Benny's on Perkins Rd. The techs seem well-trained and are polite. They always have you crank it up and check the dipstick afterwards. I pay a little extra for Mobil 1 full synthetic and the upgrade to a Mobil 1 filter, so I feel comfortable going every 10K. Free carwash is a nice bonus!

Family-owned local business, to boot.

For my f150, I cannot Buy the oil and filter for what the Ford place charges to change it. For $55, they change the oil and filter, rotate the tires, and document everything. The damn 5.0 takes over 8 quarts of oil. I change the oil in my wife’s mdx. I can usually get the oil and filter on sale for about $40, dealership wants $120 and usually stays there the entire day. I have a set of ramps to help out with it. My local orileys and autozone will recycle the oil for free.

I change my own oil because I can be 100% positive the job gets done thoroughly and correctly. Also, I don't feel like a flamin' 'mo for taking my vehicle in for a fricken oil change.

Always do my own. I can do it quicker. Pickup 13 quarts and a filter on the way home from work on a Friday. Fill the empty jugs after the change. Drop them off at the store on the way into work on Monday, or if I’m out and have time over the weekend. Takes 10 to 15 min max. 30 min if it is time for the fuel filters.

Wife takes hers to BQuick. I changed hers once, it is a PITA. Low to the ground, skid plates, filter mounted sideways... I swear they designed it to spill most of the oil during an oil change.

Google EWK oil extractor. Makes changing oil simple and mess free.

I will use those on the boat or for a partial tranny fluid change but they are way to slow for me to use to change crankcase oil, even the pneumatic ones that hook to a compressor. They do work better if you allow the oil to warm up a bit so the viscosity drops.

They do avoid the need for raising the vehicle though.

Not everyone is mechanically inclined nor have the proper tools for the modern vehicle oil/filter change
Nothing wrong with a preferred location servasing the vehicle

It takes a bit of time to change a valve cover gasket. It takes a whole lot of time to change an oil pan gasket.

Depends on where you go. I wouldn't trust some of those crack heads that work at those places to even touch my car

Took my car with 100k miles on it to the dealership for an oil change and not long after an oil indicator light went on. Checked my oil level and it was nearly bone dry. Added oil and when I checked it again, the oil level had dropped only slightly, so it wasn’t a leak. Those frickers at the dealership added hardly any oil after draining the old oil.
