It’s like anything else you do it a few times and get set up for it and it only takes about 10 minutes.
Meh. Except you forget the part about shopping for the oil and filters and taking it somewhere to dispose of it. Probably lucky to get the draining done in 10 minutes.
I gave up on changing my own oil several years ago but I do still cut my own grass. We don’t get the cheap Mexican rates here for that

I just wait for something else to break then get oil change at same time.

Dealership does them for free
So they can get you in there and "discover" other things that have to be fixed. There is a reason they "give" you those oil changes and it isn't because they are nice people.

I agree with all of this. It’s the time v. money equation and I get no satisfaction from changing my own oil (I do with my lawn).
Posted on 4/10/21 at 5:54 pm to theantiquetiger
Agree. That's one of those things where it's a lot less trouble to just pay for it.

Depends on where you go. I wouldn't trust some of those crack heads that work at those places to even touch my car
Yep. A lot of these places get jug heads off the street, paying them $8/hr.
A couple of story's that I know of personally.
One lady takes her car to WallyWorlds auto shop to get her oil changed while she went to shop for her groceries.
Pays for her oil change and heads home. Good? Nope, about a mile down the road, her cars locks up.
The guy checks the oil and its bone dry.
They call WalMarks store manager and they review the camera footage and the dufus in the shop did not refill her engine with new oil.
They reimburse her blue-book value for her car which was about $2500. It was just enough for a down-payment for a decent beater.
This was a poor widow lady who was living on Social Security.
Found out later that WallMarks does not even own the shops located in their stores. The are contracted out to independents.
Another guy brought his new diesel truck to a local dealership to change his oil. The lube 'tech' puts about 3 qts of oil back in the truck(it takes 12 qts).
The truck owner gets ready to leave and notices the engine is not sounding right. He gets the service manager to check the oil level and they find the engine oil level is very low.
Disaster is averted for both the owner and the oil change place.
Standard practice at these places is to crank the vehicle, run it a minute and check the oil level to make sure there are no leaks and that there is the correct amount of oil in the crankcase.
Some places, the jug headed lube 'tech' is either too lazy, stupid or whacked out on weed to check that.

Car has 2600 miles on it

My youngest son still likes to get under his 370Z and change his oil and look around while under there. I have an old Yukon that is super easy to get to the drain bolt and oil filter so I still do it.

I get coupons from my Ford and Toyota dealers in the mail all the time. Never costs me more than $40 for an oil change.
Posted on 4/10/21 at 6:21 pm to theantiquetiger
Paid $46 yesterday at take 5... it used to be lube stop penzolie... now u can get it done for 19.99 with coupon if you drop it off all day at a Firestone or others.

It costs $20k to change the oil in my Chiron.
I used to change our oil, but it quit being worth it when I didn’t live on the farm.
Cost, time, pulling off skid plate, and discarding the oil aren’t worth the hassle to me.

Your mansplaining here as an alter is ironic.

Yep. It’s worth it to not have to frick with the skid plate on my GX. Let someone standing in a pit do it rather than me on my back cursing with bloody knuckles.

Yep, I used to be a mechanic as well and I find it well worth it to just pay somebody to change oil nowadays.
Posted on 4/10/21 at 6:44 pm to theantiquetiger
I refuse to bring it simply because I don't believe they're putting the good oil I pay for in.

The dealerships have mobile 1 also, you just have to ask... I work for a dealership, and I’m here to tell you if your not doing it yourself, then a dealership is where you need to go, yes may be a little more expensive at times but if ANY mistakes happen, and they do anywhere you go, (i.e. didn’t tighten the oil filter all the way, to much or to little oil etc.) a dealership will fix the screw up and if any damage happened to any internal part of your engine... as for the quick lube places people that think they don’t get screwed regular are mistaken because they do, alot of quick lube places dont change the filter, a lot of quick lube places sell you a air filter and really don’t change it, it happens a lot and how are you to know the difference, are you going to go under the car and look for a new oil filter? Unscrew the air box and open it up to see if you got a new air filter or your old one just blown with shop air to clean it off? 99% of dealerships not only won’t allow that but if someone is caught doing it they don’t have to deal with a “manager of 5 min oil change” that dealership has to report to corporate (GM, Ford. Etc) ... 3 weeks ago getting a inspection sticker a lady drove up 2 mins before me, and we are both inside the little lobby room, and a “mechanic” comes in and starts tossing the laundry list of issues and problems on her car, after he walked off so she could call her husband, I told the lady they were lying everything they claimed to check and is wrong in the amount of time we been sitting there it wasn’t possible they were trying to screw her over... I assure you dealerships are the best place to go and the best place to get any work on your vehicle done unless you do it yourself.
Oh and a side note mobile 1 full synethic is one of the best oils out there but not changing your oil every 10k to 15K Miles means you believe anything someone tells you, and when your engine is full of sludge you will know why.. change your oil between 5000-7500 miles no matter what the box/bottle says

At least they provide the hole in the back plate to get to the drain plug. The first time I got under our GX I almost drained the transmission instead.

Went through one of those drive in oil changes today. Was incredibly nice. Sat in our vehicle. Changed the oil, adjusted all the tire pressures, topped off fluids, made sure there were no leaks, even offered us a drink. Took 20 minutes tops

You can politely decline them.
Sometimes, they may bring up a problem with your vehicle that you had no idea that needed repair.
I used to work at a GM service department and I can't tell you how many times I saw vehicles that were in dire need of repairs. Wore out, loose ball joints/tie rod ends, control arms, bald tires that were worn down to the threads, wore down brake rotors, busted oil pans/transmission pans, frayed belts, clogged up air/cabin/fuel filters, wore out u-joints, broken shocks/struts...
Heck, those places are doing you a great service by alerting you to needed repairs that could save your life.
You can just decline the repairs.
Do your research on recommended repairs and get a second opinion from a reputable auto repair shop if you please.
