Omegas are for astronauts and engineers, just like Porsches. Rolex can EABODs.

Or a solar powered quartz watch that keeps better time, is more durable, looks great, for a couple hundred dollars.

I like mechanical watches a lot and rolex makes great ones. It does seem odd to take the artifical shortage route these days but I guess it works for them.

The OP didn’t go in to buy a factory set diamond piece.

Of course he didn’t but AD’s put the two tone shitter diamond encrusted pieces in the case because they are slow movers and that’s likely what they offered him. Hence his $30k Datejust comment.

Surprised nobody mentioned Tudor. Great watch at $4-5k founded by founder of Rolex. Used to be called “poor man’s Rolex” but not anymore. Quality craftsmanship that many Tudor owners say they prefer over Rolex or other higher end watch brands. Tudor Black Bay 58 will prob be my next purchase. Still loving my Oris Aquis I recently got.

Watches in this day and age are just expensive jewelry. The time is everywhere. If you can afford to spend a lot of money on a watch then good for you. For me the better watches are the ones that can monitor your health. Obviously I’m older than most on here and have no one I need to impress.
nothing like a good ozympic or watches thread on the OT to bring out the hot takes.

but stopped by the Rolex dealer near me

Where did you go? Not all Rolex dealers are the same - some get a great selection, and some don't. Maybe you just went to a shite dealer.

Korman seems to have what you were looking for. How much research did you do considering the money you were prepared to drop?

Happy Submariner (and Seamaster) owner here!

I would not buy any new Rolex. The fakes are so good now it is impossible for most people to tell a difference.

Last year in Bogota, this guy flew over from China and dumped like 20 watches on the public that were so good the local jewelers could not tell a difference.

In total stole like 150k and dipped out of the country.

Which is why I would recommend to anyone to buy only from authorized dealers or one authenticated by one.

The clones are too good.

Good call. I have a Submariner and a chocolate two tone datejust, and find I wear my Black Bay GMT more often (along with my Speedie). The GMT is great on a blue rubber strap.

Artificial scarcity so Rolex could jack the price and control the market. Rolex Daytona sold new for $350 in 1973. Equivalent of $2500 now per inflation calculators. Submariners were tool/dive watches which cost less than that.

Ping golf clubs did the same thing and it worked like a charm for decades.

You keep telling yourself the Seamaster is better looking than the Submariner or GMT, lol.

There is a reason you attempted to buy the Rolex first.

My now wife and I had been dating a few months and decided to go to Vegas. So we're walking around one evening after dinner window shopping and she says she wants to go into the Rolex store. Thats never somewhere I'd ever go but, of course, I said ok. The lady behind the counter asked if she wanted to see anything in particular and my wife pointed at one specific watch and asked how much. The lady took it out and said it was like 20k, or something absurd, and asked if she would like to try it on. Then my wife pulled up her sleeve and said she already had one and was just curious what it was worth. I was flabbergasted. Seemed like a total baller move to a hick like me. She was just casually walking around wearing this thing and didnt say a word about it.

A $2,500 sub in today's market would be unfathomable. Every baw south of 90 with a 400 quart yeti and 2 engine boat would have one tomorrow.

Eh. James Bond wore a seamaster.

They're all man jewlery anyway. Sucks for a watch guy to have to compete with every wannabe baller out there though. Submariner is an excellent dive watch and it sucks that its become a status symbol. I want one but I aint paying over about $3500 for one, so ill never own one.
