NOLA Twitter

The comments are gold! Alligators are no longer allowed to walk freely in Lakeview.

Kind of obvious the "hunter" just wanted the meat. It could have been easily moved.

Alligator Lives Matter.

Just another example of police brutality.

Nah kill that thing. Plenty of gators in this world and they are incredibly dangerous in unsuspecting areas

I was under the impression that if it’s over 10ft you kill it.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said strict protocol was followed in the decision to kill a nearly 11-foot-long alligator that was found roaming in the Lakeview area of the city on Friday morning.

But the situation with the Lakeview gator was deemed to be too dangerous because of its size and proximity to residential areas.

quote:

"The one this morning that caused the ruckus was a nearly eleven-footer, weighed 300 pounds and showed up near a school," Nunez said.

Video of the gator in the street

The video was circulating Twitter this morning, before it was announced the police were getting a nice gator steak dinner and the trapper a new pair of gator skin boots. So the angry people on Twitter are just angry that the star of their viral video met an untimely demise.

We’ve reached the point that people are yelling just to hear themselves yell.

Are kids in school?

That thing was going nowhere fast. Could have easily brainstormed an idea to move it safely.

When I read the WIldlife Fishery agent is able to harvest the gator, that explained a lot

If it’s in a populated area and big enough to eat a toddler than it needs killing.

quote:

He said that LDWF doesn't handle these situations directly but calls in a "licensed nuisance alligator hunter" to deal with it — on Friday, the usual Orleans Parish hunter wasn't available, so the Jefferson Parish hunter responded instead.

quote:

That hunter — Michael (who asked that his last name not be divulged because of some public backlash over the killing) — makes the call on the scene about whether to remove or kill the gator. He then is allowed to keep the gator and use the meat and skin, according to LDWF protocol.

not very much in this world more dangerous than a gator that big. Plenty more where that one came from. If a trapper had killed that dude it would have been celebrated

no difference
