Passed through there a couple weeks ago. One of the more sophisticated baws was high classing it with a bottle of Skyy.

I’m at a conference in the middle of the FQ and it is the worst I’ve seen in years.

I’m not sure if the beggars got worse or people started craving into them more but they are everywhere.

Every person that gives a single penny, beer, or cigarette to these people can go frick themselves.

That is some solid anecdotal evidence.

Sure is.
Sorry, I don't keep a notebook and log every new story, or political commentary I read or hear so that I can give chapter an verse on the OT.

Alright, No Rama hasn't been president for two years, and if anything the problem has gotten worse.

I realize this is not a problem unique to New Orleans, but it has arrived. I see no end in sight. Only getting worse. LaToya will do nothing.

Get them all on a party bus and bring them to the Tenderloin in San Francisco, and they’ll never come back. That place is booming for the homeless, with great weather year round other than some chilly nights. And California welcomes the unemployed and down trodden with open arms. Nancy Pelosi will be there to welcome them with open arms.

I've sold them cigarettes before. They'll typically give me $1 for a cig. Had one get $1 from the car in front of me, and walk right up and ask for a cig. I told him no, and he offered to buy it. I drove off grinning ear to ear about taking that person's dollar

Who made these decisions? Can you lay out how this played out?

Back in the day the severely mentally ill were warehoused in facilities that were often truly awful. Partly due to humanitarian motives, and partly due to budgetary motives, most of those facilities were closed. Community based mental health programs were supposed to take their place, but for the most part they were never set up or funded to a sufficient level, of they were instituted at all. Furthermore, even
when resources are available, it's much more difficult to commit someone against his/her will.

And that's not even getting into the substance abuse issue, which is usually intertwined with the mental illness.

ETA my little town in BFE has homeless now. I don't know where they come from or where they stay, but you see them roaming the streets at all hours.

Part of the reason I didn't look at NOLA as a long term home.

FIFY

I can tell that it's getting cold up north. I see more and more homeless people every day here in Miami.

also doesn't help that some people are too lazy to work and looking for free handouts. The people at Poydras are actually homeless but you have a LOT of others that are not but can make a decent living tax free plus on gov benefits by begging because idiots give them money.

Yeah, the government will give them money, food stamps, a phone, housing help, Medicaid. Those programs should be enough to keep the bulk of the homeless off the streets. There has been an explosion of street people in recent years, and I just can’t believe it’s all a result of closing the mental health facilities. Opioid abuse is probably the main factor.
