WWL New Orleans

"For these New Orleanians who’ve been here for generations, they fear newcomers and gentrification are erasing everything they know."

“Ya’ll take pictures of us. Ya’ll put us on your commercials. You send us all over the world and we don’t get a dime!” one concerned resident said."

"My understanding is right now our culture and the culture that we bring here in New Orleans is, we don't want it to be weakened or watered down. I have an understanding that there are other concerns that others are coming into the city and maybe trying to mimic the culture. I want our culture-bearers to know that what we have here is authentic and genuine and we're not going to allow that to happen,” Alexis said."

I get where they're coming from but nothing stays the same forever. For better or worse.

I know more transplants who care more about the "traditions" than a lot of locals.

I like how they mention the Mardi Gras Indians thing.

African Americans stealing Native American culture, and complaining about people stealing their culture

Are they saying they don't want diversity?

Aren't these the same folks that DEMANDED statues from generations back be removed? Thought so...

Man... I love karma.

I think it was mostly transplants who stirred up the statue bullshite. Growing up, I never heard a single person ever say a negative word about any of the statues.

GIBSMEDAT.

So what they're really saying is that they can "water down" the culture...for a price.

I don’t blame them. I hate what Austin has become. Many other large cities are following suit. Gentrification in NO would take a long time, but it would start pricing people out quickly.

I don't know how anyone would support this statement after seeing the transformation of Freret St, OC Haley Blvd, St. Claude Ave, N Broad St, etc. I'd much rather have development/commerce over blight and crime.
