New Orleans was at its peak in the 1960s with a 70% + white population.

You'd swear New Orleans was a black city since the 1700s listening to these people

That's what I don't understand. New Orleans has only been majority black for the last ~40 years.

Convenient that you don't count slaves. That would make NOLA about 3/5 black in that time.

Native New Orleanians are always easy to separate from the non-locals.

My understanding is right now our culture and the culture that we bring here in New Orleans is, we don't want it to be weakened or watered down. I have an understanding that there are other concerns that others are coming into the city and maybe trying to mimic the culture. I want our culture-bearers to know that what we have here is authentic and genuine and we're not going to allow that to happen,

Good thing you got those pesky statues down, though.

If anything, being majority black, and not the good sort of black, but culcha, is one of the main problems of New Orleans. Kind of like Jackson. Or Detroit. The thugs chase out the productive citizens, of all colors, and all that’s left is trash

How did it change so quickly in such a short span?

There’s been a good percentage of blacks there since before the 1800s. There was actually a big number of free blacks and NO was one of the few places slaves had a day off (Sunday) and were able to congregate, cook, and play music. Slaves were not always counted in the census back then. Blacks do have a big impact on the musical and food culture of NO.

Carlos Marcello stopped ruling New Orleans in the late 80's and then died.

No one is arguing that blacks, free or slave, didn’t have a profound influence on the city and the south as a whole. But claiming that they alone are the standard bearers of tradition and New Orleans culture and acting like other cultures and ethnicities didn’t have an overwhelming influence in its history which shape it to this day is the height of wrongheaded arrogance.

It was the French and Spanish and later American influences that shaped New Orleans most profoundly

Seems to me they are just bitching about hipsters coming from out west, just like white folks from here bitch about them.

I think what they are saying is that a bunch of hipsters are moving in and claiming the New Orleans culture, especially the culture blacks contributed.

oh, sorry, places like Jackson and Detroit are booming because of those same reasons.

Someone earlier said that many of the middle class blacks moved out in the 70s go attack them too.

Great society is destroying New Orleans like it is destroying black communities around the country. The statistics bear it out.
