making nostalgia and kiddie stuff your daily focus seems insane to me

It's an escape from the every day realities of life.

Disney people are just diff, when they walk through the gate they are able to become a 10 year old again and live in a world of fantasy and magic that is lost in adult life by responsibility and priorities.

Alot of people have deep issues in everyday life but disney is what gives them joy and happiness.

My wife and I love going, I will admit the crowds do put a damper on it some, we brought our son last december he was 2 and loved every minute. He now runs around the house anytime he sees the castle or disney on tv and screams he wants to go there.

We are Disney Vacation club members so we will be able to bring him every other year well that's the plan.

It's not for everyone, and it isnt the only trips we take, it isnt even the most expensive vacations we take.

I so understand some people take it to far but it's their life and their happiness. As someone stated maybe those people look at people that go all out on LSU season tickets, season RV passes and travel to away games in the same light, wondering why they spend all that money and time on a repetitive event

Disney is stupid expensive.

A regular normal family trip there is 7-9k

The prices at Disney are spiking upwards, plus, once your kid hits age 10, they are considered an adult when it comes to pricing.

We went in 2017 for 7 nights over thanksgiving week, 2 adults, 2 kids, stay at Pop Century, cost was $3,200.

Just booked a trip for 2020, 5 nights over Thanksgiving break, now have 3 adults and 1 kid, cost is $3,500.

So two less days, one child now an "adult" and the cost is $300 more.

We will probably spend another $1500 in meals and travel costs and other spending. So $5,000 for 5 days.

There are indeed a lot of other things we can do for $1,000 a day. That's why I've resisted my wife's desires to buy into DVC, and we are only taking a big trip there as a family, once every 3 years. We still take a weekend trip there once a year.

I mean, I wouldn't judge anyone for going every year, but I do personally think it's a gigantic waste of money and time. There are countless cruises, theme parks, state parks, beaches, monuments, tours, etc... Why go to the same exact park every year, see the same old stuff while standing in the same old lines? For me that's a "once every 10 years or so" type of vacation. But hey, to each their own.

There are traditional things the kids and wife like to do. They always want to ride certain rides and see certain shows. Going every three years also allows us to see the new rides and shows, and try out new dining places, etc.

Going one weekend a year, is usually very focused. For example, in 2018 we went to the Halloween party, which provides different experiences. We flew in Fri morning, did the party Friday night, then Sat we did Blizzard Beach, Sat night went to Disney Springs, and flew home on Sunday.

When we go for 5 days in November 2020, we will hit each park for a day, then hop around on the last day.

Personally, I would be fine going every 5-6 years. But I also like seeing my kids and wife happy, and this makes them happy.

This is my problem with Disney. The die-hard fans are like, "of course you didn't enjoy it, you didn't do this, this, and this. You gotta do it that way or else you're going to be miserable."

frick that. I take off of work to take off of work. If it were as simple as showing up and having a good time, then yeah, I'd be down, but I'm not about all the scheming. The last big trip we took we booked a flight to and from and our first night hotel and landed with exactly zero plans on what we were going to do. We're more of a roll-with-it family.

To each their own, though. You Disney people keep doing what you're doing. Let your freak flag fly - for a fee, of course.

the obsession was on a much lower scale until about 10 years ago (and it's ramped up exponentially in the past 5) when nostalgia became one of the biggest consumables in our economy. millenials (of which i am a part, mind you) are the first generation to have their childhood readily accessible for basically all of their lives. we grew up in a world where everyone had cable TV and then the internet came around as a delivery device for nostalgia. once streaming hit, this exploded even moreso.

Disney is tailor-made for people who value nostalgia

Disney World has become a multi-faceted symbol of both nostalgia and fandom, which has made DW, as a product, very valuable for nostalgia-obsessed consumers. sprinkle in social media an it's borderline obsessive at this point

like i said in the "Christmas causing stress" thread. the exact same thing has overtaken Christmas, completely ruining it

This.

And I would have said the opposite, but I did go to Food and Wine at Disney some weeks ago....and it's just different. The last 10 years have changed it for the worse, not to mention the lines, lack of appropriate behavior, etc.

I'm 32 and have been to WDW 15 times or so, the majority of those times without small children. Planning to go again in July.

If you know what you are doing, you will rarely stand in line longer than 30-40 minutes, have great food and drink, and experience some really great rides and entertainment.

It's fricking expensive though.

I mean this with 100% sincerity.

You can do this with a hit of good LSD/Shrooms and a night away in a cabin or something.

You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to escape reality. Its on the tip of your tongue if you aren't afraid.

Here is a weird one, my Wives Aunt, she would fly to Orlando to go to Disney, about 8-10 times a year, for a decade+.

But here is the weird part, she is early 50's, No kids, doesn't get on any rides, and NEVER watched a Disney movie.

She would go to see the park, then go back, see park, etc.

Now, they live in Orlando, and She never goes.

The overbearing Disney people are just as bad as any other group of people who take things beyond excessive. Same can be said for the Ultra College Football Fan whose self confidence is only derived from how well his team does. Or Vegans/Crossfitters/I-just-got-off-of-drugs-people who do nothing but talk about their latest obsession.

The fault is not with Disney.

I know a guy just like this. He had never even been to Disney. He had a friend that tried to convince him for a decade to go, and he finally did. He loved it. Wasn’t strapped down by doing stuff for kids, just got to do what he and his wife wanted to do and he wishes he had gone sooner.

It’s really not that hard to understand once you get past the fact that it’s not just for kids.

Normally I dont, but this is family that's repetitively going to the same spot over and over and throwing pictures up on social media every time as if it's something new they get to experience when it's the same damned thing they posted over Mardi Gras.
And again, why do you care? I am sure you spend money on stuff other people do not understand. Unless they are coming to you to borrow money for their trips, it is none of your business.
