The Cult of Disney World

When did this obsession with Disney begin?
I have a family member that has become obsessed with Disney. Everything has to be Disney and they make "pilgrimages" to Disney World far more frequently than the average person. They have a 10 year old girl that has been there 6 times already, currently there for the second time this year alone. They surprised her with a trip to Disney as her big gift for Christmas at our family gathering and she broke down in tears because she had already been and the parents absolutely do entirely too much, even stated this past summer that she "needed a vacation from their vacation".
I see this stuff on social media all the time - is this just a way to project pride on Facebook now for 30 and 40 year olds? I see a few parents doing this as if the whole world becomes jealous. I don't get it.

I just wonder how people afford that shite. Granted, I’m not an OT baller.
My buddy took his wife and daughter there a few months ago and said he could’ve taken them to Hawaii for cheaper

I don’t get the appeal of going to spend a frick ton of money to hang among the lowest common denominator - the American public.

I had a cousin die of cancer. She was in her late 20s and this was in the mid 90s. She was obsessed with Disney, she ended up going as many times as she could in between treatments. I mean it was her favorite place on Earth. Its been around for awhile, but the more shite they buy up the more people get on board,

Why do you care so much what other adults spend their money on?
I don't get why people spends a frick ton of money every year fishing and hunting, but I don't start threads to bitch about it.

Normally I dont, but this is family that's repetitively going to the same spot over and over and throwing pictures up on social media every time as if it's something new they get to experience when it's the same damned thing they posted over Mardi Gras.

Have you been?
I have and it is an experience. Do I have a desire to go again? Maybe once.
The "cult" begins with the staff. They are ate up with it. Place is crawling with people. Find litter on the ground. They are all over it. It is spotless.

I took my kids there once. Never again, nor did they ask to go again. Total stand in line ripoff. We’ve had many more satisfying vacations since.

This is probably why in this case.

It’s an immersive experience geared towards children. Kids are legitimately happy and filled with joy at Disney. If you don’t understand the obsession, you’re beyond reason.

I can understand a kids obsession, not the adults.
We’re taking our girls in 2021, and will most likely do a lot of the princess breakfast and meet and greet type stuff and probably won’t even ride any rides.
Bummer

Some adults are still kids at heart. it’s mainly women which dating back to all of the early princess storylines, Disney tugs at them the hardest at an early age. I dislike Disney btw, I just don’t think it’s hard to understand why some families go every year or whatever

It's not my thing but I'll never make fun of people that get into it. I went for the first time at about 33

That, or he’s not a kid. The thread is about cult-like obsession adults have with Disney, and in that context it’s an interesting subject, like cruises meets Precious Moments.

Do you have the same issue with a family who purchases season tickets, a motorhome pass, and a a motorhome to tailgate and attend LSU games? I mean they do this 8 weekends a year, year after year...
They could do many other things with the potentially tens of thousands per year spent to do this.
Who gives a flying f$ck how often and where they go.
For the record- I’m not saying Disney is the be all-end-all vacation spot, but I get why some people like it.
