A disposable will still cost you some. I told y'all what to do. I have a college graduate son and one in high school and I haven't paid a penny increase in my insurance.

That sounds high honestly.. I write a lot of families with teen drivers and honestly it just depends on the scenario.
I have some i write a separate policy for say Progressive list the Dad and kid on that policy and exclude kid from parents main policy.. Or my customers that have been with Met Auto for a long time the teen addition hasn't been terrible. So it really depends.

As an Agent my advice.. Shop around and don't be afraid of State Farm either..

You can always make you kid get a job.. My oldest teenage son pays for his insurance..

What kind of car- haven’t bought it yet, but I’ve got quotes from vehicles worth 2k to 10k and it didn’t move the needle by more than about $40/ month

Thank the personal injury racket (think Gordon and DeBossier). Insurance companies don’t set their rates. They are approved by the Department of Insurance. The mentality of “in a wreck get a check” is destroying this state. There are only (2) Fortune 500 companies in the ENTIRE state. Centurylink in Monroe is one of them. They will be out of the state in less than 5 years. The personal injury racket is a big variable in the equation as to why they will be leaving.

Farm Bureau insurance gives a huge discount on things classified as farm vehicles (which include trucks and SUVs). It is actually cheaper to insure a 16 year old male driver on a Landcruiser than it is a Prius with their actuary tables.

I pay cash for my vehicles and carry minimum coverage. It’s still a scam. Done it for 20+ years and never made a claim. I’m not sure why I am forced to carry liability. I would risk it and pay the consequences if it arose. I thought this was America.

buy a "safe" car that is more than 10 years old.

Put the minimums on it.

Add it to policy.

Exclude your child from other vehicles.

Until the insurance company denies coverage and you're stuck hiring an attorney and/or paying for injuries out of pocket

Switched my 19 yr old son to Progressive with me & him listed on his truck. Went from $5800/yr to $3200/yr. We had Shelter Insurance before.

Should have added "also depends on the company" .. B/c of course all are different.

This was take from direct underwiring guidelines from one of my Co's

quote:

We determine an average rating factor for all rated drivers and then apply that factor to all vehicles

So a company like this would be expensive, if the parents are driving expensive to insure vehicles.
..

Trying to post the other Co's rating model... Damn Underwriting guidelines are 800 pages.. FML

Here's another one... Which is quite interesting

quote:

When a Listed driver turns 17 years of age, that driver must become a Rated driver ? unless in another Driver Status category ? as of the effective date of the next renewal term whether they have obtained a learner permit or driver license or not.

So basically.. With these guys they aren't rating for them until the child is above 17..

We did this w/ my 16 yr old and our policy only went up about $100 / month (State Farm).

When my youngest turned 16 and got his license, we excluded him from our policy w/ Progressive. It says on the insurance ID card that he is an excluded driver. We bought him a used Accord @ 17 in my wife's name and named him the primary driver and bought a full coverage policy through Geico for about 140.00 a month. We did this to avoid having our rates @ Progressive double by adding a 16/17 year old male driver. He is now 21, the car is in his name and he only pays about 125.00 through Geico and dropping down to just liability would only save him about 20.00 a month. The Lions share of his rate goes toward liability, so driving with shite / no insurance wasn't an option. Like others have said SHOP around, the General, Allstate, State Farm all quoted 3-400 a month for a teen driver.

Surprisingly, LA is middle of the pack in uninsured drivers. It's the ambulance chasers that make our insurance so expensive.
