the liability is the lions share of the premium esp with teen drivers, you will save very little

That used to be the way to do it. But insurance companies wised up, from what I understand, and they rate the teenage driver on the most expensive vehicle in the home.

So don't let your kid drive your nice vehicles. You can list them as not allowed to drive certain vehicles on policy.

Make the kid get a job to cover insurance

Or have the car completely in the kid’s name. PO box as address, no connection to you and just let him drive around uninsured like everybody else in Louisiana.

For the cost of the vehicle and insurance you can hire a chauffeur.

no they don't, If the teen has his own car the teen gets rated on the vehicle he drives the most.

ETA: Unless the Company use an average across all vehicles for rating.

USAA is very expensive with teens

Otherwise it’s the cheapest I had to switch to progressive for that reason due to my step son

Wow. I want to say my USAA auto is like only $800 a year. That will be a big change

Rockford, you aren’t far off. A $20 Uber ride a day vs a 10k car and insurance about evens out

This is extortion. I’m in the wrong business

Look and see if additional drivers are already covered under your current coverage (like lettin a friend borrowing your vehicle. Are they covered?). If so, don’t add them

My 15 yr old has been driving her future car with a permit for months. When she's 16, we're giving her the car and we'll be set up that way.
Older car with just Liability. She crashes, she walks.

s Is it essential for your kid to drive? Serious question.

It would benefit us, but not esential. 2 other younger siblings. All at different schools due to their age and they’re all into sports/ practice etc. it would definitely give Mom and Dad some relief.

I think my daughter will be a better driver than my wife. It would be hard to be worse actually

That’s about right. I had to go through the same situation that you are in and I feel your pain.

LINK

quote:

Instead, auto insurance underwriting and rating rules, which are approved by the state, normally assign the highest rated driver (usually the youngest or the one with the most violations) to the highest rated vehicle (usually the newest or most expensive).

Car insurers then assign the next highest rated driver to the next highest rated car and so on, if you have more drivers and vehicles in your household. It doesn't matter if you own all the cars listed on the policy, the other drivers on your car insurance policy can still be rated and listed on your vehicles, since they will be operating them.

While it may make more sense to you, for car insurers to rate the driver with the actual car they drive the most, that isn't how it happens with most insurers. There are a few carriers who will match up each driver to the car they use the most when determining the primary driver of each vehicle. However, this is not the norm.

I guess to some posters' point, it might be possible to exclude the teenager from coverage on certain vehicles, but that's risky. Anyway, seems we're both right in a way.

I won't have to deal with this for another 14 years or so. By that time, car insurance rates will be really fun.

quote:

If your son is rated to your most expensive vehicle, but he will never drive it, then you could see if it's possible to exclude him from that vehicle. Some car insurance companies allow this (also state laws must allow a named driver exclusion of this type).

If you did an exclusion for your 25-year-old old son on the most expensive car then he wouldn't be rated on that vehicle, but he also couldn't drive it because he would be without auto insurance coverage for it.

With a named driver exclusion like this, he wouldn't have insurance coverage extended to him if he drove the car he was excluded from, since you aren't paying premiums for him to have use of that vehicle.
