$400! more a month (good student discount included) for the same coverage my wife and I have and adding a vehicle. USAA
Any tips? Strip the teen coverage and lean on umbrella homeowner policy? Any other company/ policy recommendations?
5k a year for a kid to drive is very very painful.

Ahhh welcome my friend. I have 2! Both boys, which cost more than girls, and both with discounts for the safe driving course online and grades.

Sucks

Don't add your teenager. If they get in a fender bender, your insurance company will pay it, but then your insurance will make you add your teen.

Buy the kid a "disposable" car and only get liability insurance.

Strip the teen

well that's one way to make up the $400/mo. hell even your wife could probably pull $200/mo.

but will need pics of wife before processing your claim.

Try 2 teens. It's fricking insane.

You won't get an umbrella covering auto unless you have underlying higher limits 100/300 or 250/500.

Try GEICO for the "best" rates.

Make you or your wife the primary driver of the new vehicle. Add him as an occasional driver to your policy.

I'm hoping my wife doesn't completely destroy her Accord and I can give it to my daughter in 4 years. It will be 10 years old then and I'll absolutely only carry liability on it.

Louisiana auto insurance rates are laughably high anyway. It's not surprising at all.

Is it essential for your kid to drive? Serious question.

Just went through same thing and this is best advice you will get. Very huge difference.

That's not a good idea. Umbrella policies require you to have minimum limits on autos, usually 250/500 or 300/300. So in order to rely on the umbrella to cover you if your teen wrecks and injures someone, you must be properly covered elsewhere, and that includes having your teen insured on one of your autos at the minimum limit (250/500 or 300/300).

If you leave your kid off the insurance and he/she wrecks and injures someone, your insurance company can legally deny the claim based on an undisclosed driver driving at the time of the accident.

Think of it this way:
There was a damn good reason you bought an umbrella policy to begin with. That reason is because you have lots to lose in the event of a lawsuit. Do you really want a teen with little driving experience driving your vehicle around with all of your assets in the trunk?

Try Geico. Their rates are ridiculously low.
