Teen cheerleader's Snapchat brings Supreme Court clash over schools and free speech

Not sure she should've been suspended from the squad but not surprised it happened.

When 14-year-old Brandi Levy didn't make the varsity cut as a freshman cheerleader for the Mahanoy Golden Bears, she sounded off on social media, as teenagers are known to do.
quote:
"I was frustrated. I was upset. I was angry. And I made a post on Snapchat," Levy told ABC News Live. "I said, 'F school, F cheer, F softball, F everything.'"
quote:
When she posted the vulgar message to her friends on a weekend in 2017, she never thought she'd hear about it again. But days later, the school accused her of breaching a code of conduct and suspended her from cheerleading for an entire year.
quote:
"This is the first time that the U.S. Supreme Court is going to decide whether the rules that apply to kids when they're in school also apply to their speech when they are outside of school," said Sara Rose, an American Civil Liberties Union attorney defending Levy in the case.
quote:
"When they're not under their school supervision, kids are under their parents supervision and the parents are the ones who should be able to decide what's appropriate for their children to say when they're at home," Rose said.

I mean, it’s dumb that the school did this, but also dumb that you put it on social media and then got upset when people reacted to it.

What's the point of suspending her from a team she didn't make it on?....

Absolutely ridiculous to have arbitrary rules imposed by school administration apply to your life entirely until you leave school.
Forget executive branch overreach, now teachers and administrators are dictators?

I probably would have had a similar reaction, but we didn't have phones or social media platforms back then.
I probably would have just said to my friends at lunch, frick coach whoever.

She was JV and tried out for Varsity, so when she didn't make the cut she was still on JV.
She’s really lucky to have made the JV.

This thread is going to be full of people agreeing with the ACLU. An OT rarity.

Why is it dumb for the school to have a policy for participation in extra curricular activities that limits social media?
Aren't we trying to teach people how to navigate the world? What would happen to an employee who made a post such as the one made by the young woman?
If she were not in an extracurricular activity, she may exercise her right to free speech with impunity.

I feel they are right in this instance. Parents should be the ones to do or not do something about it.
Like someone else said, we probably did this when were in school but it was vocally. Thank God there wasn't social media back then.

Didn't make the varsity squad because that face is busted.

I'm not expecting many 14 year olds to be too smart when it comes to social media.

If she wins, which I think she should, I wonder about it opening up codes of conduct, like the ones places like BYU have.

Would have a precedent for it. Not sure how it would affect things in the future.

Public schools should have zero ability to enforce arbitrary rules outside of the school itself.
Private schools can have any contractual requirements for entry that they want.
Did she attend a private or public school?
