I pulled my youngest son out during his junior of high school to go with me on a business trip to Europe. We made a side trip to Rome and to see the Pope. While unexcused, I wish I had pulled him and his brother out more. I bought into the BS of not missing school for anything. He learned more on that trip then any other experience school related. My wife and I planned the trip well in advance, coordinated with the teachers and the School Board, but still got grief from the Principle (non-Catholic) about going to the Vatican. My son had NEVER missed a day of high school, 3.98GPA and already had a ACT over 30. He now attends LSU.

Pull your kid for Experiences if they have the grades and have good attendance records! Go to DC, New York, Boston or another country. You will not regret it. My son still talks about the trip.

Sitting on the Disney bus right now leaving the Orlando airport. Friday is fair day so she’s only missing 2 days of school.

<———— Went to ‘67 & ‘68 World Series Games with his Pops who got him out of school to go

:rip:

Also went on family vacations a couple of times per year.

I made good grades and I was never sick so I always had a bunch of spare days.

Took my own out a couple of times per year, always told the schools in advance, no problems.

Raised an Air Force brat, and after my father retired they did this when I was in school in the 70's. They took me out for a week once. It was usually when my dad had to go to some training or conference out of town for work, and If my mom wanted to go they took me out. I'm glad they did. I got to see parts of the country I would never have seen otherwise.

some real idiots in this thread. your kids arent missing out on anything by missing a week of school.

if your kid makes As and Bs just go ahead and take them on the vacation, public schools go so slow because they have to pace things for the slowest learners that your kid will probably pick up everything they missed in a day or 2

I’m taking mine to Australia for two weeks in November. Teacher is going to give them their assignments prior to us leaving.

We did this a few years ago. The principal, who’s from Australia, called me and gave us all kinds of tips and sites to see that we would not have thought about.

Where in Aus will you be?

We stopped doing this once they hit middle school. Elementary school is a joke though so we have no problem pulling them out for a trip for that.

This coming May my oldest is going to Disney for a middle school band trip and we're pulling our Kindergartner out for a week and taking her along.

Why not, then you can take vacations with the kids to places where other derelicts kids won't be. Those fricks will be in school, while you and your kids enjoy the parks, places, w/o those shite stains of other parents ruining it for you

This is my deal, as long as my kids are doing this I really don't care how many days they miss.

Probably not, but you don't miss school to go to fricking disney world, or the beach. That's a stupid reason to make your kid miss school, something that kid only has to attend for literally half of the year.

You take a trip to Europe that's a reasonable "vacation" to miss school for as an older student. You have a business trip to NYC or Boston or DC, and make a long weekend out of it with your kids, that's reasonable.
The beach and Disney World for a full week aren't acceptable.

One of the best feelings as a kid was knowing that I was getting picked up early from school to head to hunting camp for the weekend during the fall. Good times.

We do it for Kindergarten, and I imagine we'll continue until my oldest gets into a grade where each day is important for his grades. Not sure what that is these days or will be in the future, but I feel like it was probably around junior year of college for me.

Kids are going to get more from life experiences than they will from a week of rote memorization in school

If they can’t catch up on a week of spelling words and some simple math, your kid has bigger problems

It seems to be increasing, that's for sure.

And yet these same parents will bitch that "teacher sucks" when Little Johnny falls behind in class.

Now, several times I missed class because of traveling for a game, or a conference for an organization, or a competition, etc. But... we used to have to get a paper signed by all of our teachers saying it was ok if we missed class time, and we agreed to make up all the work, and we had to have a C or better average in the class.
