My parents would also surprise us on a Thursday and pull us out of school to leave on some weekend trip having already packed our bags for us.
I did that a few years ago to take my son on a camping trip. Kid was so damn fired up when I picked him up at lunch and he saw what all was packed in the car.
And he learned a lot about nature, conservation, etc, on that trip. Hell of a lot more than he would have learned in class.
There was also an old fort within the park we camped in, he got some great history lessons as well.

The OT always cracks me up with its consistent inconsistency.
Any other thread about elementary or high schools and it would be page upon page bitching about how they are all worthless liberal indoctrination centers staffed by alcoholics and/or sex crazed predators.
So of course this thread is filled with pearl clutching about missing so much as a day.

The type of parents who pull their kids from school for a couple of days to take a trip, in my experience, are the type who aren't completely reliant on school for education.
Very true.
In NYC public schools, absences for any reason are avoided. The admission process for the desirable schools is very competitive and objective. Test scores and attendance are the two of the main criteria.
At this private school in Denver, I was told that during ski season many families head to the mountains on Thursday after school and commute back in Monday morning.
