They'd probably break the 2hr mark if they were wearing asics...

I went for a bike ride today and averaged 14mph. These guys will be averaging 13.1 mph for 2 hours. I was on a fricking BIKE

Nothing more than a Nike marketing ploy.

Wouldn't it be freaking hilarious if something happened to the shoe of the one guy who was on pace to make it at the very end?

That's pretty damn slow on a bike.

In a race the top are not racing the clock, they are racing their competition. The goal is not to run 26.2 miles as fast as you can every race, it's to run as fast as you need to to win the race or secure your position/points etc

I understand, but I would think a world record time would likely win the race Its not like other events where they blow their wad just to break a record but forgo the total victory. The record would ensure victory. Weekend before last they had the N American Ironamn Championships and the bike record was broken, but the guy got smoked on the run because he was spent. I get going for a sub record like that won't happen often because people want to win the whole thing. This is not the same thing.

I would just think that at any point in time someone could attempt this if they had the chops. I don't think what they are adding is enough. Unless these guys have sniffed the world record before, nothing about this is special enough. And if it is, I feel the record deserves an asterisk.

I think conditions play a bigger factor than anything (temp, wind, sun exposure, etc.) And you can't exactly control that.

I will be attempting a sub 2-hour mile later this year. I've been doing 30-minute quarter miles to train.

Somehow this feels like a PGA golfer trying to score a 58, which would be a new record, all the while the course is set up easier and they allow lift, clean, and place throughout the course.

I wonder if they have already set that mark in training. And they're using this as a huge marketing ploy for how great the shoes and equipment are when all three go under 2:00

I have no idea, but it seems like something you can't just go out and do on command, even if you've done it before.

No person has even done it once in history. I don't think Nike is hiding 3 dudes who've all done it before and will do it again.

Why don't we just pump them full of EPO and just go at it if there are no rules (I'm not going to lie, I'd love to see that happen).

It won't count for a record because the pacemakers will be doing their duty in shifts--Group A starts of pacing the guys, after one lap group B joins in, after the second lap group A drops out, B continues on for another lap, and group C jumps in. B drops out after the next lap, group D joins in, and so on until they complete the distance. This way there will always be a group of pacemakers on their first lap so they will be "fresh". Of course, the guys Nike hired as rabbits are superstar runners--guys who have qualified for multiple world championships on the track and cross country.

For a record to be ratified, the pacemakers have to be in the race from the beginning.

Nike is sinking a ton of money into this--Eliud Kipchoge is the defending Olympic champion and was looking at a certain $200k+ appearance fee to run the London marathon this spring, but is forgoing it in favor of this endeavor. They hired an F1 driver to drive the Tesla (no exhaust to hinder the runners' breathing), etc.

I was doing sprint Intervals on the treadmill at 13.5 a couple weeks ago. I was only doing it for like 10 minutes and I pulled something in my hip. Keeping that up for 2 hours? Jesus.

Agreed, but chasing and getting a world record (when the victory is already secured) can also increase the chance of an injury.

For these elites, this is their career and a way they can support their families and injuries are devastating. WR's often bring a small prize purse but something like this from Nike is paying them HUGE. Thats the only reason they're even doing it. Theyge getting paid to do it and if they actually get the WR or go under 2 mill the payout from Nike will be substantial. In racing, the money is in the victory.

Well...kinda. That athlete has a little back story there. This was him less than a year ago.
