Okay, I guess this sort of answers my question. Would this make it 'legit' as far as being a record, though?

Yep, according to what I read, they are ensuring it will count and the regulations are pretty damn stiff. Road grades, etc. have to be within a small range.

Wait, it takes some people more than 2 hours to run a marathon?

Although I don't think they'll break 2 hours, I do believe a new WR will be set.

That's hopping on a tread mill and setting it on 13mph for 2 hours. Insane!

Eliud Kipchoge has a PR of like 2:03...3 minutes would be a HUGE gain. I just don't see it.

No shite, in all seriousness. I don't think most of the OT could avg that on a bike.

There are fat OTers that can't sprint 13 MPH for 40 yards

Why would this in any way work better than a race condition? I fully understand that a true pacer will help and is not allowed traditionally. But I'd assume with current technologies (GPS watches, etc), 2 or 3 guys can get together and form a game plan that would allow them to contest the current record. Why would these three suddenly do it, when no one else has done it in a race. Additionally, if any of these "special" circumstances does truly provide that much benefit, then why would the record be allowed to stand. Why don't we just pump them full of EPO and just go at it if there are no rules (I'm not going to lie, I'd love to see that happen).

I want this to happen in every single individual record sport. Like swimming, track, shotput, etc.

would be so badass

Blood dope, testosterone, HGH...the works.

ETA:

Lets see how fricking fast we can get some to run and swim. And how far someone can physically throw a javelin and shotput. How far they can hit a baseball or a golf ball (although I doubt they drug test on long driving circuit).

I want to see someone pitch the ball 115 mph to a guy who hits 600 foot homeruns

well...for one they are actively trying to break the record

when you are racing, you are just trying to win the race, records just kinda happen most of the time

there is a difference

In a race the top are not racing the clock, they are racing their competition. The goal is not to run 26.2 miles as fast as you can every race, it's to run as fast as you need to to win the race or secure your position/points etc.

I don't think they will. I don't think the advantages are great enough. I think theyll set a WR but like I mentioned earlier I don't think the true goal here is to really go under 2:00.

The goal is to sell Nike shoes, clothing and gear.

I don't think it happens. 3 minutes is a huge amount of time to shave off, even under ideal conditions. Hoping they can do it though, I'd love to see history be made.

4 1/2 minute mile pace? For 26.2 miles? That is just simply insane.

Nothing more than a Nike marketing ploy.
