Whenever all the dust has settled from this storm, I really hope people hold these politicians accountable for how they handled this situation. It’s really pissed me off, because ever since Katrina, every parish president and mayor talks about being prepared, and having new plans in place to protect people, yet I feel like we’re in the same spot as 2005. This is especially true in NOLA.
I don't know if it is 18 months of COVID Fatigue/Depression but I feel the Metro area is less prepared than 16 years ago or we have that much worse leadership compared to then.
On the night of August 26, 2005 (three days before Katrina hit), there was an exhibition game with the Saints and the Ravens in the Superdome with 50,000 people. August 27th was the oh-shite moment.
Same exact timeline. Politicians this time just replied "Shrug. Not enough time. Figure it out. We're not providing any services."

Yeah, but isn’t the storm surge directly related to wind speed/direction offshore?
Also, im aware that the tide can add to the problem but help in some situations

The incompetence really is astonishing

There have been Cat 3s that drop more water and wreak havoc more than some Cat 4s.
My educated assumption on this is most cat 3s that make landfall were at one time cat 4 or 5s that weakened before landfall. So the wind field unwound and expanded. Most cat 4s that make landfall are at their max intensity so they’re wound up with a smaller more focused max wind field.

In 2005, they told people early to GTFO. They ran busses. People stayed anyway. This time they didn't go with the mandatory evac because the mayor is a carpetbagger, with no frame of reference to understand what a Cat 4 is.

We’re only about 6 hours from landfall
So just noticed that the 4 am update says 140 mph now.. and 145 mph 12 hours from now.. and that is 6 hours after landfall?
Thoughts?

I made this post yesterday and some people got upset. Our lack of preparation for this storm from officials is 100% related to their lack of ability to focus on anything other than Covid.

Can't wait to see fedgovs response. I don't think I'd trust them to make a pitcher of Kool aid right at this point.

So it seems like this thing at landfall , in regards to wind speed, is going to be pretty similar to what Laura did in lake Charles, correct ?

The may have it tracking more west which would make landfall later. But it looks like it’s heading right for Grand Isle

When it hits, I hope you all remember to mask up and socially distance. That’s the most important thing now.

I’m just saying debating cat 3 vs cat 4 is a waste of time.
The storm could potentially be devastating. So folks need to go now. Worst case is you spend $500-1000 to save your life.

or perhaps they think it goes to 150+ and falls to 145 after landfall?
