Yeah there is rapid intensification but this is bordering on Explosive Intensification. Models are useless right now, this storm is going crazy.

Also high tide is 1pm tomorrow for Nola. This is not going. To be pretty. Someone said earlier Katrina 2.0, they might not far off from that.

Agreed. This is not wishcasting.. I hope I am dead wrong, but people need to treat this like Katrina at this point.. if it isn’t as bad, great.. but there is a chance that is right up there.. prepare for the worst..

Do the various affected parishes normally have individual check ins and people communicating separately or does everyone keep that stuff here in the megathread?

I think Nguyener said he'd be posting a check in thread tomorrow AM. Basically a check in thread for pre-Storm and a check out okay in the same thread for Monday PM.

At least that's what I recall reading 100+ pages back. Hell, it could already be posted--I've been in this thread almost exclusively since Thursday.

Going to try to sleep, everyone.

Just finished some reading on our levee protection and I feel a lot better going into this. Glad our parish voted to pay for it.

Thanks for all the info and kind words. Godspeed to you all.

Saint Gabriel is going to get smoked. Stay in Mandeville assuming the house you're in is a safe one.

The flags are wind speed (in knots, or nautical miles per hour), a solid triangle is 50, a long line is ten, a short line is 5, so the highest measured so far was 105 kts at flight level. There’s also a color scale to cheat. A nautical mile is 2025 yards and a regular mile is only 1760 yards, so there’s a conversion to get wind speed in normal mph. Then you have to correct for winds at altitude compared to the surface, which is what the dropsondes are for. They take measurements all the way until the hit the water. From that they can tell what it’s doing.
Old Air Force Nav, but never on WCs. Would have been a dream job! Props to the guys and gals working all night to get this for us!

Katrina was not a wind event it was a busted levee water event for NOLA...and a mass destruction for coastal Ms. What exactly are you insinuating by a Katrina event?

I wonder how much the models are tainted by pre-warming data. We know the last few years have been the hottest on record, and storms like Michael and Laura have exhibited “atypical” behavior—strengthening rapidly at landfall over the shelf.

Taking the GFS model verbatim, BR will hit gusts between 80-100 mph. Pirate King, stay in your lane

Your graphic literally shows the highest gusts in the state is up to 90 MPH. BR is showing 50’s up to mid 70’s-80 tops…

Another option would be to take hwy 61 to Natchez, or go on to Vicksburg. I was there today. Plenty of gas. Maybe rooms available also.

Saw Louisiana tags but not number to bumper at any point. Just an idea

I have a quick question for anyone that can answer.

How safe is carville? My daughter's national guard base is there and that's where she is thru the duration of the hurricane. They'll be sent out to help with the aftermath. Just a concerned mom

The devastation. Katrina was a wind field event. That thing was fricking huge and it had Cat 5 attributes. It doesn't matter what they categorized that storm at landfall it was slamming hard with Cat 5 attributes. Katrina was so big and powerful it actually killed itself because it got too powerful.

A giant surge.. catastrophic winds.. and 25 inches of rain on top..

A complete fricking disaster.

It won’t be the same.. no two storms ever are.. but it can be equally catastrophic for different reasons.

Question for rds, Duke, or Boat: Is there any correlation between the eye location and the tornadoes associated with storms like this? I've always understood tornadoes were spawned on the east side of storms--basically the "tail" that extends out on the east side. So, are tornadoes more/less/equally possible in the area of a storm's eye?

This is absolute shite. He's right, high tide for New Orleans is at 12:59pm right as the worst storm surge would be impacting the area.

High Tide 12:59 PM
(Sun 29 August)
0.76 ft
(0.23 m)

Everybody come on up to Memphis. We got fried chicken, and ribs, and blues. Not sure why everyone is headed east or west.
