On that first pass, the wind field for a wind speeds above 64kt was 116 nautical miles wide (might have been wider but the plane turned to make a NE to SW pass)

116 miles of hurricane force winds? Holy shite.

As of 10 pm, it says 40 miles from center.. so added 18 miles on each side in the last 2 hours.. that is impressive.

Earlier this evening, a FL meteorologist posted downtown NO wouldn’t see hurricane force winds. He was specific in saying this didn’t affect surge. Any truth?

about to try and get a few hours sleep while the blessed A/C is good to go here in St. Charles parish.

Do the various affected parishes normally have individual check ins and people communicating separately or does everyone keep that stuff here in the megathread?

thanks to all the useful contributors in here, accurate info with knowledgeable analysis is very welcome and seemingly impossible to find on the normal media outlets

I left Saint Gabriel with my wife and 3 kids to stay with family in Mandeville. I was assuming a strong direct hit was coming to SG. Should I be waking them up and going back to Saint Gabriel or with family in BR to get on the west side of this?

but there may be a time in the next few hours where you should ask mee-maw if she's comfortable putting your life at risk.

Unfortunately there’s no chance this happens. My 86 year old grandma is in her house, my 92 year old grandma is at her house and my inlaws are at their house. And they’re all more stubborn than the last.

I’m at my house with the wife and kids. We all wanted one last sleep in our houses and tomorrow morning we meet at 6am.

My only shot of leaving would be to literally go pound on their doors now and demand everyone leave. And even if I do that successfully it still leaves a couple emergency responder family members here and a couple of other issues we could sort out.

I’m stuck here for better or for worse and I’m not the only one. Most of my neighborhood actually stayed. But we’re prepared. A few of the people I’m with were rescued after Katrina. We’re not taking this lightly and it is absolutely going to suck a-hole.

We have all the supplies and emergency preparedness we need. I’m just praying to god we’re all healthy and sound minded come Monday morning so we can deal with whatever hell awaits us. I’m sorry if that sounds dramatic. Everyone but me is sound asleep so I’m just left with my thoughts and TDOT.

I would've went to Houston had it not been for my grandmother so I just rented her a hotel right by a hospital on the same power grid. I'm staying in there with her since nobody else wants to deal with it in the family. I figure she'd be good there since it will get power before anyone due to being located on the hospital grid. Entergy definitely flipping hospital on first.

From the NHC:

quote:

Storm surge is caused primarily by
the strong winds in a hurricane or
tropical storm. The low pressure of
the storm has minimal contribution!

Taking the GFS model verbatim, BR will hit gusts between 80-100 mph. Pirate King, stay in your lane

Yeah there is rapid intensification but this is bordering on Explosive Intensification. Models are useless right now, this storm is going crazy.

Also high tide is 1pm tomorrow for Nola. This is not going. To be pretty. Someone said earlier Katrina 2.0, they might not far off from that.

Drove my family from Covington to Orange Beach today, 7 hour traffic in what normally takes 3 hours.

It’s bad and it’s windy here already. May pick up in the morning and drive more East.

If you live in southeast Louisiana and you have to ask “should I evacuate?” The answer is yes.
