I don’t know. Current winds are at 105 mph. TWC just did a comparison to Katrina and this one is just so much weaker. At the 10PM advisory on the same day Katrina was a CAT 5. This one is a CAT 2. Katrina had hurricane force winds 100 miles out, this one is only 40. So while this is obviously a big storm, it’s not a Katrina. It won’t be a CAT 4. Itll be lucky to be a CAT 3.

Extremely cold cloud tops.

Think of a hurricane as an engine taking heat and turning it into wind. Assume the surface is roughly 90. The higher the storm can lift the air, the colder it gets and the more energy it extracts.

In other words, typically a sign of strengthening.

The strongest and most intense storms you can have. I believe pink is the highest color it goes on that IR image.
