Am I crazy for staying in NOLA for this one? We don't flood and for every storm in the past ten years our power has been back up in less than a day.
You will be out of power longer than a day so that’s something to plan for and deal with
I feel if you are in Nola and haven’t picked up to leave you are stuck with your decision to stay and just need to prepare.
I’m in this boat and just planning to deal with the storm then go a street over to the in laws with their whole home generator

My conundrum is does my family stay with my 85 year old mother in St. Amant where she has a whole house generator or bring her to my home in Prairieville that is made of brick and sturdier.
St Amant! If the storm turns east you can move to the brick house, but with the western movement, comfort is trumping safety as far east as you are.

Exactly what I did. I read that post about five minutes before the Amelia exit and jumped off

Weather channel just said most models are backing off on projected intensity levels BUT still saying CAT 4 at landfall.

You could start at your home if it's more safe during the storm, then migrate everyone to hers for the power after the danger is gone.

Toilet bowl is more appropriate.

A couple of predictions have 110+ mph winds in Baton Rouge. That has never happened before. And I would strongly consider evacuating if I were there, depending on if that is backed up by the next report.
Getting a little nervous in St. George. How well do house structures hold up in 110+ mph winds?
Disregarding trees, could that kind of wind actually knock walls/supports down?

How much rain are we thinking in prairieville? I flooded (barely) in 2016, I’m freaking out right now lol

I don't want to speculate on any intensity changes though because I don't know enough to give people hope or caution.
The 12z runs were a positive development for intensity. They are indicating cat 3 at worst, as opposed to cat 4 before.

Looks better but that's in knots, not mph.

The way people are freaking out for some reason makes me feel better.... Usually when people freak it seems the storm is never as bad as it should have been. When people aren't worried (like Katrina) it seems to hit harder... #findingcomfortanywhereican

Good thing you can still use knots to determine categories

A well constructed home can probably handle winds like that with mostly superficial damage. But it can’t handle the flying tree branches, fencing material, and other debris that will be a part of the storm if it’s truly that powerful. That’s the problem here and why evacuating might be something worth considering.

As a hurricane expert who lives in LC and experienced Laura's impacts, I will say a lot of it is random
There are going to be these huge gusts and mini tornados that form and basically create wind bursts that wreck shite along their path. We had one in my neighborhood. Those can frick up a house without a tree.

It would have to be a shack to have problems in 110 mph winds. Katrina hit NOLA with at least that, and there was very little structural damage - damaged roofs, but nothing that would get the occupants hurt.
