Those models seem better

But it certainly seems like any decently organized storm with any time at all in the gulf has bombed out in recent years

Katc in Lafayette is actually showing the Nam model for a hurricane just because it goes the furthest west.

They are some fricking hacks

Satellite presentation is rapidly improving this morning. The 06z HWRF looks to be pretty spot on as it showed a period of reorganization before starting to bomb out b/w 12z -15z today. Two recon plans are currently flying and both show the pressure a tad higher than the 06z HWRF for 12z but not by much.

With the way it looks this morning I don't see how it doesnt get to 4. If this had been a deep tropical one coming from Afica I'd bet she wouldve got to 5

I'll note that the official NWS forecast for Covington now states "tropical storm conditions with hurricane conditions possible," Yesterday it was "hurricane conditions." The hour by hour forecast is for sustained winds of 30 mph. The rain total is now 8 inches, down from 12. I don't now how that matches up with a cat 3/4 hurricane tracking ~60 miles away but there it is.

This is because of the west shift of the track.

How well do house structures hold up in 110+ mph winds?

Disregarding trees, could that kind of wind actually knock walls/supports down?

As a hurricane expert who lives in LC and experienced Laura's impacts, I will say a lot of it is random

There are going to be these huge gusts and mini tornados that form and basically create wind bursts that wreck shite along their path. We had one in my neighborhood. Those can frick up a house without a tree.

Think much has to do with wind direction and whether the wind is able to get under a piece of the house like an overhang or a porch or patio area. For Katrina I was good until the wind shifted to coming in from the north and then the house started coming apart. First a neighbor's oak tree fell through the house, pool and cabana. Then, once roofing started coming up, it was all over. Worse part is not being able to see because of darkness. Could only hear what was happening. I am staying home for this storm and was hoping it would hit during daylight.

I can vouch for this. Some houses in my neighborhood were unlivable due to water damage. This wasn’t from flooding but from water pouring in after the roof was compromised. Others were fine. Barely lost any shingles. Then there was a older house probably less than a mile away where the roof was literally lifted off of the house. It can be very random.

This exactly. In Katrina (Slidell lakeshore) we had one of those fancy play sets in the side yard. 6x4 timbers with cemented footings 18” deep. Got home day after the storm and the house did fine, roof got tattered, but the play set was gone. No clue which way it went. Nothing left but 8 holes in the ground. Neighbors house on other side had the balcony ripped off. Crazy stuff.
