40 acres. And you need a mule.

Or so I've been told.

You can grow as much food as you want. It's protecting it that's the real challenge.

My papaw(and mamaw) had about an acre garden that fed my uncles family(4), my dads family(4 of us) and my aunts family(3) for the year. corn, beans, peas, okra, squash, tomatoes. Everything we needed sides wise.

Is this literally all they ate? Not that likely but certainly mostly possible.

I'd certainly plant as many trees as possible so you'd have some peaches, blueberries, blackberries, etc. that you had to do almost nothing for every year.

I gotta have some beef in there somewhere. Assuming, of course, that this is ag only and not including hunting for meat.

This is part of permaculture. There are baws out there growing all their food, and then some, on a quarter acre.

But it requires quite a bit of learning how to do so. It's not your typical gardening/farming.

We ate other things but could survive as the OP indicated. We would split a steer, hog, and lambs from 4H too. That would need to be accounted for in the OP. My uncle had blueberries, watermelons, and muscadines so I guess I should have included that.

So we could have survived on just the garden but yes we ate more and one would certainly need more for a complete diet

Yea, I think you need an acre of garden, rotating seasonal crops all year long to feed a family of 5-6 people. Then you need land for livestock, a water source, fishing, wildlife habitat etc. 10 acres minimum I think.

I have 25 acres with all the above and think I could make it if I had to

I think I could do it on 1 acre with only chickens as livestock. It'd take some planning and some vertical gardening for some stuff. You could plant corn, peas and squash together. Rotate to turnips and radish in the winter. It would be difficult on only 1 acre, but I think I could do it.

But if society breaks down, guarding all of it will be the biggest challenge.

On an acre or less I'm only raising chickens.

Live on an acre with 1000 SQ ft of air conditioned workshop, and another 4000 SQ ft warehouse for our commercial grow. I can shut down a few rooms for food production if needed.

The real question would be why? 50-100 years ago when everyone was farming their back 200 and raising chickens, pigs, and a couple cows they could survive all on their own but there's no reason to make it that hard on you.

You simply trade to a degree. No reason for everyone to grow watermelons, you trade your beans for someone's watermelon. You trade eggs for some duck, etc.

I'll tell you something no one thinks about, but if shite really hits the fan go and buy as much salt as you can. There's a reason why salt was worth its weight in Gold back in the day. If you are growing your own food you certainly are not likely to have a fridge.
