By generation or party? Y'all act like the generations weren't divided along political lines and supported this shite unilaterally.
And by the way the only politician has that attempted fix SS was a Boomer!

We need the SS expert "doctor" to weigh in on this news.
Someone will have to do the math for him, though, what with the decimals and all.

None of them ever do that.

Do people realize how many people who paid SS their entire working life died before they were old enough to draw a nickel? Todays money is backed by nothing. Most of the national debt is money owed to SS that was used for other things. It is all smoke and mirrors and a means of control.

I worked 40 years in the oilfield, I bet I put in more than you did! if they want to increase my check than I'm all for it. we should have never had to put into that scam to begin with.

These young posters don't care about that. It's pretty simple for me, I have now put in for 38 years, probably have one more to go, and then I hope to recoup most of the money I and my employers have put in on my behalf.
I didn't set this up, I was just someone who had no choice but to contribute, but since I did, I would like to collect. Why do some struggle with this simple concept?

It will likely happen to SS. And the only way it doesn't is if we have a mass extinction event of older people, they raise the age a lot for eligibility, or they raise the amount owed each month by those paying into it in future decades substantially.
I haven’t seen the analysis lately but I remember a while back that they wouldn’t even need to raise the retirement age all that much. I think it was something like 66-67 for early and 69-70 for full and that would at least stop a lot of the bleeding.

Your money was spent by the elderly of that time while you failed to fix the system. Don't complain now because people want to fix it.

The money can come from the General Fund instead of foreign aid, welfare, etc. for all we care.
You don't understand the numbers involved.
And Social Security is a welfare program. It's the same redistribution system as any program you deem to be welfare.

This is correct and is rational but the old people pretend like this is lighting their social security lock box accounts on fire.
I listened to a very informative podcast a few months ago about how delaying retirement only a few years (for people who fund their own retirement, not SS) makes an incredible impact on what you need saved by 65.

And Social Security is a welfare program
Were we to actually view Social Security as welfare, it would be more appropriately viewed as welfare for Uncle Sam.
Regarding your edgy premise, social security would be an unusual welfare program in which the welfare recipients paid their own way, with paying one's own way assuming something just north of the horrible ROI assigned to Social Security "investments."
If a financial advisor advised a 20-something or 30-something or even 40-something to invest in an account with a Social Security type return, he would be run out of town on a rail. But you not only consider that sh*tty ROI a "benefit," you even go so far as to call it "welfare."
Congress would dearly love to force Americans to lend it even more money through the SS vehicle. Your sort of mentality. is one that will be manipulated to allow the government to attain its expansion of social security under the premise of "generosity."
As many times as we have discussed this, it is a shame you don't understand the actual nature of the program and its design.

Personally, I'd love to see Congress sunset the program along the lines W suggested 20yrs ago. Sans that, I'd like to see COLA cut or frozen for higher income recipients, along with raising retirement age. Anything to scale the size of SS down.
But because the program's only actual beneficiary is Uncle Sam, the effort will be to grow SS at public expense, not shrink it. And future young people will bitch at you for ripping them off, all while Uncle Sam sits in the corner smiling as he counts his money.

Nice edgy take and original thought . . . Bond Money is spent the moment you buy the bond too. The government still has an obligation to pay that debt. Go see what happened to the market the last time they threatened to downgrade our Bond Rating.
quote:

No one is complaining because people want to fix the system. I've been hoping they would fix it since the 1990's. However, I can hope they fix it and demand they pay their debt obligations at the same time.

Again another edgy take with no basis. You can call it whatever you want, but unlike other welfare programs. I can log into my account, see how much money I have paid into the system, and how much the government owes me when I'm eligible to collect. That amount is calculated based on how much I've paid into the system. I'm assuming other welfare programs don't have this feature.
Seems more like a shitty run pension plan or annuity than a welfare plan.

It all boils down to somebody has to get extremely fricked long dick style at some point here, and the people drawing it now would rather it be their kids than themselves.

The whole thread every time this comes up -
Old people - "I paid in for 30 years I want my money back. I dont care what happens long as I get minez"
Young people - "youre being paid with my money. Yours is gone. It needs to die now. We'll give up what weve put in to make it go away"
One argument is not like the other.
