So who hit the Sotheby's auction and came away with the $54M Mercedes?

Samantha Power bought it.

I like how they made Mercedes seem like it was completely surprised by the outbreak of war in 1939.

I think I have a couple of those in storage somewhere.
I'm gonna need to get with my warehouse manager and make sure.

What a colossal waste of money. 0 shot I'd buy that over a $54 million mansion. I mean like come on: a $54 million mansion or that car. Like really. I wouldn't pay over $20-25k for that if I wasn't aware of its value.

A person that buys that doesn’t have to choose between the mansion or the car

Chelsea Clinton needed a daily driver.

I wouldn't have either because they would both be ridiculously stupid. But I'm not a bored billionaire

Thank you to whoever bought it, I was forced to sell it when my USAID gravy train got frozen. My yacht crew ain’t gonna pay for itself, and I couldn’t let their poor children go hungry.

It's the second most expensive car publically sold. The #1 is also a Merc a '55 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe which went for over $140 million. There are some Ferraris that would beat out the W196 in the OP but I doubt there is any car in the world that could beat the Uhlenhaut currently BUT the Uhlenhaut was sold for charity so it isn't necessarily indicative of the FMV.
If you are a uber-rich car nut cars like this aren't the worst place to park money.
The W196 is a gorgeous car but if I had mid 8 figures to drop on a car it would be the #23 Ferrari 250 GTO.

Pay the VAT or pay Sales Tax to get it into whatever state the buyer calls home. Not an easy decision, unless you are, in fact, filthy rich

Schumacher F1 Car
From the same auction…I’ll save $53m and just buy one of Schumacher’s first F1 cars for a cool mill, and hang it on the wall…
