So the U.S. government collects about 54 billion in taxes from all the gas burners.
(The number of EVs on U.S. roads is projected to reach 18.7 million in 2030, up from 1 million at the end of 2018. This is about 7 percent of the 259 million vehicles (cars and light trucks) expected to be on U.S. roads in 2030.)
How long before these tax cheats have to pay up like the rest of us. If you own an EV, does the taxes the government will come for at some point, sway you from another EV purchase.

They do need some kind of fair road taxes for EV's. It's ridiculous they get rebates to buy them, then free charging.

How would this work? Tax the energy used at the public charging points but leave it alone for private residences?

This is why the Mr Gay Paternity Leave in the DOT is trying to get mileage taxes passed.

I have no problem with them not paying gas taxes. The less tax money the government brings in the better imo

They'll just tax another set of dollars.

The way they just assume that thet HAVE to collect more taxes for things instead of cutting in other areas is infuriating.

Of course. The thieves in our government will steal more money one way or another

So an EV owner would be required to report the number of miles they drive for the year to the federal government? And presumably to the state government as well if the state has a similar tax? Is this a yearly tax or a monthly tax?

They do. Georgia charges an EV tax every year since they don't pay any taxes with their gas purchases.

My problem with it is, the more gas vehicle numbers go down the percentage of gas tax will go up.

Perhaps the fairest way to do it would be to eliminate the gas tax at the pump and have ALL drivers (gas & electric) pay fee based on miles traveled. But obviously there are issues related to keeping track of that which would have to be figured out.

When you go in for inspections they'll record the mileage and send you a bill, yeah. That's pretty much how it'll work.

Pretty easy to track tbh without needing someone to report it.

I’m honestly also surprised they haven’t tried to push something similar to the Congestion Charge zone like in London in some cities here yet.

Considering taxes pay for upkeep, and passenger vehicles, for the most part, do very little damage, divorcing taxes from fuel consumption should be a priority. But, people are so used to gas taxes, they notice them less than they would a sizable increase in the cost of goods in the store due to the burden of road upkeep being shifted to large trucks, so it's unlikely to ever happen.

Easiest way to do that would be to take the mileage down each time you get your car inspected. Would suck to pay it all at once though.

I don’t think every state requires inspections.

The OP seems aggravated about ICE owners paying gas taxes. But directs his anger at EV owners.

Not sure about the logic overall. EV owners do pay taxes on a state by state basis (similar to state gas taxes) and everyone on toll roads pays tolls.

If the problem is resentment of government taxes then address that to the government. If the problem is resentment of EV owners liking EV cars then get over it - in a free society that's part of the deal
