People exploiting loopholes in the tax code? Big shock there. In the world of tax loophole exploitation, this has to be a nothing burger.
Right, it amounts to something like $250/year per vehicle.

We had to invest in better infrastructure.

Things like the interstate highway system in the US came way after vehicles. It was more of a reaction decades later.

But people wanted a vehicle because of the advantages over other modes of transportation. EV tech isn't anywhere near there yet and given the replacement cycle length for vehicles I think it will be another 30-40 years before it is. I'm 44 and think it's not unreasonable to think that I might never ever drive one unless forced to by the government.

It started long before the interstate system. Road Act of 1916, Highway Act of 1921, etc. Ford lobbied heavily for public road-building initiatives.

Especially after they had decent roads for those advantages to shine.

You realize people have had an EV as a daily driver for over a decade now, right?

Sure. And in a decade we've advanced enough to have them become approximately 1-2% of vehicles on the road. Now maybe that rate will increase but with the life cycle of vehicles being 10-15 years I'd say it will be rather slow.

Yes it will take quite a while. Are we finished talking about how many tax dollars were required to get people to switch from horses to cars?

There is an extra fee for registering an EV in some states.

I’d rather get rid of the federal gas tax altogether. The only federal taxes we should have in this country are tariffs on foreign goods.

Everything else should be at the state/local level.

Seems to be a lot of EV anxiety on this board recently.

There is no way that they will pass a mileage tax solely for EVs. This will hit all cars and be in addition to the gas tax.

The alternative, and I can see this coming, is to have a gps device reporting our every movement to our government overlords with a promise that they won't ever use the location data. WHat could possibly go wrong.

I'd rather that the EVs just use the roads for free.

Maybe mentioned but La tried to pass a charge for road tax at the registration stage. Problem with it was way more than a gas car paid in road tax for the year or 2.

MS just puts a $150 add on to the tags of EV's, they do pay a tax on KW used to charge them if at home.

Perhaps the fairest way to do it would be to eliminate the gas tax at the pump and have ALL drivers (gas & electric) pay fee based on miles traveled. But obviously there are issues related to keeping track of that which would have to be figured out.

Some places are going that route.

Except not with removing gas tax because government never gives up a revenue stream.

It's cute you think the mileage taxes will only apply to EVs

They just need to get the same tax dollars from EV drivers, that's step 1.

Which will, of course, eliminate one of the incentives of owning one.

They will become even more cost prohibitive when the tax credit fir buing one is fully removed.

By the time this levels out you'll be paying $100-$200 a month to drive an EV, I guarantee it.

This is the exact phenomenon that streaming television saw.

Cheap AF first, just like internet service was, but now, you're back up to paying $150-$200 a month for streaming TV and your internet connection.

They're gonna start tacking on fees like mad if you register an electric vehicle to your name to make up for the loss of road tax paid at the gas pump.

Now that all manufacturers are making them, the incentives need to be removed. If the goal was to force the manufacturers to make them, we are there.

Sorry that most of you live in states that require you to have your own property "inspected". Screw all that.
