Two different scenarios.

One ad was appealing to Africans in general.

The other is saying men are bad and they sell men’s products.

It’s really not that hard to see the difference. I myself did not care about Nike’s ad. Kap was a shitty football player. Doesn’t upset me he can’t get a job. I’ll still buy some nike.

Gillette ain’t happenin.

Most of Nike's growth came from China.

Not possible.

Nike did get a small boost in sales in North America post-ad, but that isn’t where it’s boost came from.

It came from a 35% increase in Chinese sales.

No one can recreate that.

ETA: Scruffy misunderstood. He thought you were asking if their ad would cause a boost like Nike.

ISO, no.

Gillette’s market share has been decreasing steadily due to cheaper options being available.

Scruffy doesn’t see people switching to spending $25 on a razor in order to support a company because of an ad.

Shooting yourself in the foot to get attention is not a winning strategy...although to someone who will do anything for attention I can see why you’d think that

Nike's has been pretty damn effective

Seen any Kaep ads lately? Wonder why Nike has spent $20B (yes billion) buying its own stock back?

It's not shooting yourself in the foot. These are billion dollar companies, do you think they are just doing shite that could possibly hurt their company?

Do I think they are capable of grossly misinterpreting it’s reception nationwide?

Yes.

Do you not remember new coke?

But before you praise Gillette for its courage, let's put its decision into some marketing perspective.

First, Gillette isn’t forging any new ground here. It’s riding the wave of cultural change that others have been courageously forging by speaking out against sexual harassment and assault and bullying and challenging the formerly acceptable excuse of “boys will be boys.”

The strategy is similar to the one Nike used with its controversial — and highly successful — campaign starring Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL star who put his cause before his career by kneeling to protest police brutality against African-Americans.

Nike was rewarded with soaring stock value and a sales boost from its alliance with Kaepernick, proving that social awareness can sell, too. If Gillette can convince enough consumers that they're doing some good by buying its products, it could help enormously in its current battle against the rival Dollar Shave Club.

They're all equally ineffective, if not counter-productive. Just think, since Trump stole the election:

Nike
Gillette
Keurig
Starbucks
NFL
Nordstrom
Netflix
Anheuser-Busch
Nabisco
Amazon
Ben and Jerry's
Apple
Hamilton (the play)
Pepsi
....there are probably more.

And liberals are the snowflakes?

Nike received a North American boost of about 3% after the ad.

They received a 35% boost from China.

The overall boost wasn’t due to the ad, but it did help some in NA.

No one is going to spend 20x more money on razors because of this ad.

Look, the response won’t be nearly as negative as people may want it to be, but Scruffy doesn’t see a boost from this.

No one is going to switch from cheap DSC to overly priced Gillette because of an ad.

The opposite is more likely, mainly because it has now been brought to their attention.
