Was there a few years ago and stopped to get gas. It was 0° with about a 40 mph wind. There were guys on a man lift working on the the roof over the pumps.

I have no idea how they could work in those conditions. But it really is a nice place when the weather is nice.

Winters are much more manageable in Rapid City.

Lived in Colorado mountains for 2 years. 9800 feet elevation. The summers were great, but the winters were a big reason why I no longer live there.

Fun fact - Leaving Korea in 1990, I had orders to Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City. Coming off a three year hitch in Northern Maine, I was able to get the orders changed to Barksdale. That's all I got, could have been me.

No chance in hell I could survive a winter there though.

I would love the summer days out there with their 6 am sunrises and 9 pm sunsets.

But then on the flip side, it is as cold as F— in the winter and daylight has banker hours in December 8am-5pm.

South Dakota and the black hills are absolutely beautiful. I could live there from April to October.

We were there in May when it was great. Asked a couple of locals what winter was like. One said, “Not gonna lie. It’s brutal.” The other added, “And that wind never stops.”

I imagine the wind would be a real issue. I can take cold, as long as it goes away fairly quickly. It doesn't that far north.

The constant wind noise was said to drive some pioneer women crazy. They were stuck in a sod house during the day with the constant whine of the wind. Their husbands would sometimes get them pet birds so they would have something to talk to and hear something other than the wind.

How far do I have to go for some diversity? It’s our greatest strength.

Winter

I’ve spent many a winter working in North Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming. One short stint near Sioux Falls. Brutally cold winters working outside in temps. Seen temps down to -30 or so wind chill -50s.

Other than good looking women, personally give me anyone of those states every day of the week over South Louisiana, Mississippi or Alabama to live in. Absolutely beautiful up there. My opinion is.. It’s cold there but it ain’t that cold. And they’re also prepared for it. But it’s just different there man, different vibe. Life is just so much better in those places to me. And the summers kick the absolute dog shite out of summers in the south.

Cold is cold once you get a certain point. You can compensate with clothing, hand warmers etc.

South Texas felt cold as hell to me.

Hoping to move to Montana or Wyoming one day.

They get lots of snow, all you see is white. So pure, clean, just better.

Try Look’s Marketplace in Sioux Falls. Decent brewery and a butcher shop that has a good dry aged beef program.

this dumb trope

I moved to MN 2 years ago and it's cold as frick. Winter is fricking miserable.

No, you aren't wearing shorts when it's 30 degrees either, because it's 30 degrees with 20 mph winds.

It's May 9 and I just wore shorts for the 1st time last week.

Even if you can get past the godawful climate and suicide inducing topography of Eastern South Dakota, the Midwest is very boring and devoid of character. Sioux Falls is a bunch of slow moving yawner types who haven’t seen much except Sioux Falls. Traveling might be a trip to the Omaha Zoo or a Minneapolis Hockey tournament.
