I don’t necessarily want to rent forever, just really till I can save up for a down payment for a house.

$1005 for a large studio that includes parking. My building is literally next to the lake, it's safe and close to work, so it's not bad for Chicago.

I pay $800 for a garage apt in Beaumont (includes, water, electricity and cable). Got my own entrance and parking spots, plus my landlord stays away quite a bit. I had to find a place quick after my other place got flooded out during the storm. Not a bad arrangement though. If I was still in BR, I think I would have to do something similar. Real estate is crazy expensive right now..

I’m $1200 for a 1/1 in Dallas (not Uptown or Greenville). My complex is very nice though.
I was about $900 for a nice 1/1 in Memphis on Mud Island a few years ago.
The 2/2s on Mud Island were a steal though...it was around $1200, so $600/month with a roommate.

30 year financed a house in shenandoah, mortgage+insurance+tax is $1300 a month, then tax returns gives me my property taxes back

350 a month plus bills. I moved back in with my parents after 10 years out of the house. It was rough adjusting but it's actually pretty awesome now. I'm finishing up school so not having to stress about caring for a house is great. I'm there maybe 3 nights a week.

That's rediculous. I can get a 1 bedroom in uptown Dallas for almost the same price. But anyway, you need to decide if you want to drop that much on rent. If I were you, I would move back in with my parents for a couple of months and save. You said your goal is to buy a house, if you can save an extra $1200/month you can do that way faster. Now whether you should buy a house is a different discussion. If you aren't going to be in it 5 years don't buy because you'll probably break even at best unless you make significant improvements or get lucky.

1/1 in BR in a decent area is around $1000-1200. I was paying $1100 for a new place with granite and wood floors on the 1st floor of the complex with a parking spot, but SF-wise it was small

As a boomer, I know I benefited from having the best economies in modern history but dammit we had it so much harder than you entitled millennials. I graduated college with a history degree and immediately found a great job with benefits. You millennials have no idea how difficult that is.
