Much of Africa was part of the French territorial empire in the early 1900's. After the fall of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I, Lebanon was a part of the French mandate. Lebanese tended to immigrate anywhere with a shared French language/culture (see Louisiana). The Christians, with the aid of the U.S., suppressed a Muslim revolt in 1958, but after being swamped with refugees from Palestine in the 60's, Lebanon descended into Civil War in 75-90. Those who could get out, did, especially the Christians.
Remember, prior to the collapse and civil war, Lebanon's economy was heavily reliant on tourism. Beirut was "The Paris of the Middle East". They had organized crime running that, much like Cuba in the Batista days. When they emigrated, they found new hustles. Lafayette had a Lebanese mafia at one time as well, but most of the leaders were imprisoned forcing the rest to go at least semi-legit.

Dated a Muslim Lebanese for 2 years. Her family moved here whenever she was young because of the fighting but they still spend a month there every year. She was great (beautiful and very successful) but most people thought she was a bitch.

Lebanon is unreal, and like mentioned earlier, is actually a Christian nation...Muslims have become the majority recently through immigration and take over though. Lebanon was actually the Christian capital of Rome. Anyway, most Americans think of Lebanon like Afghanistan, when in reality it is more like Croatia...
