in the wild? and where?
Only twice for me. First time was in Alaska on the back of Elmendorf AFB. I went for a drive on back of base and saw one walking out in the open. Mid sized black bear i believe.
The second time i was in Montana helping my dad finish work on a cabin in the mountains and saw one walking the property about 100 yards away. Another mid sized black bear. Keep my distance both times and didnt move when i saw them.

many times out hunting early season before they take their naps. The most interesting one was seeing momma and two cubs. Stayed way back and upwind, amazed at the strength of mom as she casually flipped slabs of granite aside looking for bugs and critters. Colorado high country.

If you consider inside national parks "wild", then yes.

Rockies, Tetons, Yellowstone & Smokies to name a few.

I've seen a 5hitload of bears. Most frequently, I've seen them at Cades Cover in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I've run across them a couple of times on trails in the park as well...but it's just black bears. I give them plenty of space, and they have just done their own thing. That being said, there have been bears spotted in various areas in and around Knoxville over the years...but I've never run across any there.

First time I saw one was at Avery Island touring the Tabasco facility. They have some signs up that say “watch for bears”. I thought it was a joke. It was not. As my daughter and I walked through their “parks/gardens” my daughter said, dad there’s a bear, looked up and an adolescent black bear was just standing there looking. He never showed any aggression, and ran when I yelled.

This was summer of 2018 I’m guessing. My daughter was 12 so no pics. Although I did take pics of the bear.

Lots

Saw them all the time when I lived in California. Don’t see them quite as frequently here in CO but it’s not uncommon.

I've seen quite a few black bears while hunting in Tensas. I watched one climb up an oak tree and hang out in the top eating acorns like a squirrel.

Photographing bears is kind of a hobby of mine. Mainly black bears in town, but brown bears elsewhere. My favorite place is Pack Creek on Admiralty Island, which has roughly 2,000 brown bears and 1,800 sq miles of land. More than a bear per sq mile.

Pack Creek bear viewing

I see one at least twice a week going after our trash.

Only ones I've seen in person were around the salt mines on Avery Island and Weeks Island. I've seen them on 4 different occasions. 2 were just kind of running away from us. I was eating a dead coon in the road and the other was eating out of a dumpster. We also had one on trail cam in Centreville, MS. But I did not personally see it, only pictures.

One on Avery Island had a collar on.

ETA: Forgot to add I saw one crossing Hwy 90 around Baldwin last year.

Only 1 black bear so far. Had one cross the road in front of me while on my way to go fishing at Cypremort Point. Would've missed it if I hadn't been looking straight ahead, thing was across the road quick.

Wife's aunt has a place in Glenwood Springs, CO and there are bears all over the place. I also came across a bear while mtn biking in Virginia. Very unsettling when you're by yourself. I've since learned that they really don't want to have much to do with people.

Lived in the N GA mountains as a kid and they were common. Usually just dumping the trash cans and strewing trash all over the yard and I had to clean it up. Once while doing so I found an empty ravioli can sitting upright on a rock licked clean …I imagine the bear sitting there enjoying the view enjoying his find.

Another time one came into our screened porch where we kept food for the cats…he accidentally knocked the door closed and panicked….tearing the shite out of everything until he pushed the door back open….all with us looking out the window.

Black bears are skiddish so unless you corner one they’re far more scared of you than you are of them.

I was driving up I-4, heading to Daytona and saw one on the side of the road, inside the fence aboot 20 miles past Deltona.

He was looking for the necessities.
