I believe the St. George movement and similar incorporation efforts are influenced heavily by education problems. The K-12 system has alot of ineffectiveness and it needs to be addressed.

Capitalism is normally the best solution. If we paid higher quality teachers better, fired those who underperform, and made two tracks for high school (college or vocational) it would simplify the process and help all students.

Why would you be against a capitalist school system?

EDIT: why am I getting so many downvotes for pushing capitalism?

You say "America is not a socialist country" but as soon as a capitalist solution is proposed to a public sector that goes completely out of the window.

Maybe. As long as the taxes are cut proportionally.

But this would realistically further divide haves and have nots and quite possibly cause significant social tension

We should let the govment fund the schools but there is no reason why we should allow them to run the schools.

I never understood how we allowed the state to become the primary educators of our children. Private schools or charitable schools are the answers here. They are much more effective.

Capitalism is dedicated to the maximizing of profits.

I'd rather education move to a private NFP model

You'd have to make sure the schools receive the same amount of aid/tax dollars as the public institutions currently receive.

The reason I am against straight up "for profit" schools is you will see them become diploma factories much in the same way we see the private "For Profit" online universities.

You'd also see classes with lower enrollment #'s eliminated despite we all agreeing kids should have the ability to choose different education pathways. Classes such as shop/music/art should be a mainstay in all schools

Isn't this essentially how the charter school concept works?

how would they be funded? If it is just govt contracts to private "schools" then the same govt intrusion is going to follow so will not be any different than it is now bc the govt money will come with strings attached and nothing will change.

If it is strictly private funding basically how current private schools are then only the select few will get educated....what about all the lower income family kids and their education? Even if there is a vocational option it still requires funding from somewhere.

So first what is the plan to fund all this private/capitalist school stuff and once you have that lined out then can start the discussion on which way is better.

One thing about the Charter system is there are way too many schools opening and not enough talented educators to work in them. So what you get is a diluted pool of schools each scraping by rather than truly providing a better education.

Historically, only the rich could be formally educated at any level. So they probably made do with private academics and homeschooling.

It wasn't until the past 2 centuries that an education for the entire population was addressed. We used the state because it was the simplest system at the time (everyone pays taxes, their kids go to school, they get jobs and repeat the process).

Because I don't live in the bubble of St. George and enjoy having an option to choose if I want to send my kids to private or public schools. The 17 minute commute from the AP is worth having that choice.

There is always vocational school. Everyone is capable of holding some form of employment (save for incapacitation).

Public schools are already like this. Tons of kids graduate high school and can barely read.

The teachers aren't the problem, the students are the problem. Until students and parents are truly held accountable, schools will continue to "fail".

I thought we could just use the tax base of the parents sending their kids to school.

For poor areas, you could use state government funding. But it needs to be lean. Just enough to cover the essentials of education. Students from these schools could test out of a poor school and be bused to a better school via a scholarship program.

Absolutely not. The educational system needs reform for sure but private schools aren’t the answer.
