Historically, only the rich could be formally educated at any level. So they probably made do with private academics and homeschooling.

This is just not factual. Churches have been educating the poor for centuries before gov't funded public education.

Something must change. Louisiana's school rankings came out last week or so. Not much has changed. We have been throwing barge load after barge loads of money into public education in Louisiana for at least 20 years ,if not longer. Still not much has changed. Many have said private industry is reluctant to locate here because we have such large uneducated workforce. With all that money why no positive results? If the student refuses to learn(apply themselves) what can we do short of booting them permanently out of the school system. Someone mentioned that we would have a caste system if we did away with public schools. In a manner of speaking we already do.

Texas has many Charter Schools which are privatized public schools funded with taxpayer money. The majority of these Charter Schools perform worse than their public counterparts in the same neighborhoods.

The only time I’ve seen Charter Schools work is when there is some kind of regulations that hold them in check. In some states, they’re just there to funnel public money into someone’s pockets.

The single biggest thing that we could do to help public schools in this country is to give power back to the teachers in the form of legitimate discipline. If they are not receiving special education services and they’re too disruptive to be in a classroom then it’s time that we hand them a user ID and a password for online courses.

The education system is a focus of finger pointing on both sides and is a money sink. As such it is ripe for political manipulations, heart string tugs and political power in the form of teachers unions and administration/political grandstanding. There is no way in hell whether good or bad that schools will be privatized. Take comfort in the fact that the performance of our students in general ranks very low against students around the world. There is no problem to see here.

The state department carefully controls these scores. They can manipulate criteria and test items to get any result they want year to year. They’re cooking the scores, believe that.

Absolutely.

At a bare minimum, we need to remove the bad from the classroom.

If the child or their parents don’t want to be in a proper school, they should be offered other routes.

We need to remove those who are causing issues for the students and families who truly want to be there.

Are you talking Baton Rouge alone? Or all public? Because no way in Sam Hell that will work in BR and it has nothing to do with Socialist ideals.

People treat education like the do healthcare: they want equal outcomes regardless of where they go, how much money they spend, or their personal predispositions. That's not how it works.

Stop taxing me for public school and let me make my own education choices. The current system is like Medicare for all.

The Principal / CAO should be someone with an educational teaching background, but their purposes should be improving educational outcomes by working with teachers and curriculum.
