Should we be steering more kids into the home improvement / handyman trade?

It seems like all the people in this profession have unlimited amounts of work. The thread on here about not even getting calls back for estimates was apt.
There has to be money to be made there right? Compared to a human studies degree or whatever.

If your kids like little to no money, no benefits/insurance, and working shitty hours... then go for it.

Low spark must be a euphemism for dimwitted.

If you own your own plumbing business the only thing about this that’s true is shitty hours & that’s because there is so much work & it’s hard to find qualified help

They can achieve this dream with absolutely no skills.

Don’t steer them into anything. Let them figure it out and make their own choices.

Thanks for joining us here at TD, Mike Rowe.
Seriously though,
Let's be real, the Venn Diagram that shows the overlap between someone willing to do physical labor style work and someone who has enough sense to maintain a business is pretty slim in the middle. To your question though, there needs to be less pressure to go to college. The majority of kids that go either aren't qualified or end up not using the education they pay for.

Everyone is caught up in the "American Dream" because in HS they are preparing everyone to go to college and the ones who don't plan on going is sort of pushed to the side.
No one thinks that "I am going to work in home repairs", but there is a lot of demand out there for smaller projects. I am talking about everything from people wanting to add on to other smaller projects that if there was a roto rooter type company that focused just on smaller jobs there is money that could be made.
Most good contractors don't do smaller jobs because they are too busy with big jobs. There is a niche to be filled and if someone could come up with a way to fulfill those demands, there is some money to be made.

this mindset is exactly why we have a student loan debt crisis today.

This is how you get offspring with no direction or clue until they are in their late 20s/early 30s, excepting the highly motivated and focused individual.

It’s already included in the maintenance part of STEM.

Of course, either a main or back up trade. There's some weak arse dudes out there who are only good for making fight videos at the Local Denny's.

He's not wrong.... I know very successful contractors but the health insurance kills them.

Must not be very good insurance if the mortality rate is that high.
