We should probably just start teaching them all actual life skills again, that way they can fix stuff themselves rather than either paying someone else to fix it or throwing it away to purchase new....

same can be said for any company. It all depends on the benefits and plans offered. But there are alternatives. Still no reason for his mindset.

Seems to be a lot of young people getting their BA in crap that doesn't translate into the job market. I've never understood why someone would spend all that time and money on college to get a degree that is basically worthless.

There is money to be made in the trades, but it is not going to happen overnight and, unfortunately, a lot of young people don't want manual labor jobs. They dream of getting that first job in an air conditioned office making $80K plus benefits to start.

unfortunately the stuff we have now doesn't lend itself to that anymore, with electronic parts, or just being so cheap it's more economical to throw away and buy new

Because too many have been fed the bullshite line that they needed to go to college to get anywhere in life, even if they didn't have the aptitude to go. Low-effort majors with near zero ROI are turning youth into lazy drones that vote Left.

Yes there is, contractors are struggling to find good people and will pay and OJT and they are paying very well.

I have taught my son a lot of handyman skills but he is a business major. I told him no matter how high you go in the corporate ladder it is always good to know how to get your hands dirty and to also remember how hard the work is.

That's not true, there's hardly anything I own that I can't fix and electronic parts are easy to find and very cheap.

No one wants to see their kid sweat anymore so they push them into college vs a trade of some sort.

SIL only works 4 1/2 days a week. He did work thru this pass weekend cause his wife and son went to Destin. He hates the beach. That room was 1K for the weekend. Oh, he told me he has 7 jobs on the waiting list.

I got a business degree and parlayed that and a connection into a corporate office job that I absolutely hate.

Started a lawn and land business a couple months ago and currently working towards taking up that full time and leaving this BS corporate world. So yes, I believe many kids should be steered towards other things. I have always been fairly intellectually gifted, but working outside doing something I care about vs one more day in this BS office is a no brainer for me.

A friend of mine just had a $31K closed in patio that required relocating a wall, new walls, and A/C run to it. She had 2 estimates, took the person who was more thorough. The crazy thing is 4 other contractors never called back. Therefore, I see the OP’s point.

If you own your own plumbing business the only thing about this that’s true is shitty hours & that’s because there is so much work & it’s hard to find qualified help

Owning your own business is the key to making really good money. Entry level laborers have to have an understanding of where the pay will go once they prove themselves. That time gap short circuits potentially good workers at times.
