I know I read a while back that they are going to start charging people to read their articles on the Advocate website. Well it finally kicked in for me this morning. Screw them man. How the hell does somebody think this is a sound business decision? Their reasoning was they weren't getting enough ad revenue from Google anymore, so they're going to have to start charging readers and only have the online content available for subscribers. Well, frick off then, you won't get any clicks or ad revenue from me anymore. Printed papers are a dying breed for a reason, and Baton Rouge stories are worth paying for. Don't kid yourself and think this new system will improve your bottom line.

The standards of journalism today are so pathetic that most isn't worth reading for free, much less paying for it.

All they do now is post other comments from Twitter.

It's a silly business model given there are 3 or 4 other news outlets covering the same smallish area. I've heard the guy that runs the advocate isn't very bright. I guess this confirms it.

Just copy the article link and open in an incognito or private window.

Paywall defeated.

I think this will backfire on them. All the articles that are posted here from the advocate, and I sure as hell am not going to pay for them

The Advocate's "journalists" are borderline retarded. Hell, some may be illiterate. You get dumber for reading their shite.

Turns out businesses need to make more money than the spend to provide a service...

Color me shocked.

Speaking of business models....this short-sided thought process is similar to Cox and AT&T. If you priced things accordingly from the start, there would be nobody looking to switch cable providers. Just price it at the promotional price all the time and keep customers.

The Advocate and all newspapers will be and almost are in the same trouble and mindset of Sears. Allowing only subscribers for online content isn't adapting to the changing world, it is business suicide by doubling down.

I've probably visited their site once a year on average, mainly when something of note was happening with LSU.

Charging for access to the site means I'll search a little longer to find the news I want elsewhere, on the rare occasions I need that.

Shouldnt surprise anyone since they built an $11 million building for their staff after investing in a massive new high tech print facility

Chicken needs to set up a paywall just for IP addresses originating from the Advocate. Make it fricking EXPENSIVE, too. You know those frickers come here to get their stories because we know first, post it, and they don't have to give any credit for their "journalistic efforts". Allow their competition that does not have paywalls to continue to come here to get their info.

frick that rag.

The fact that you're here bitching about it says you value their content some amount. The trick is finding the right amount to charge and the right way to charge it. Unfortunately nobody has cracked the MicroPayments system which is really what's needed here. Maybe you don't want to pay $10 a month for the paper but you might be willing to pay $.10 per article you read. The problem is it costs significantly more than $.10 to charge your credit card $.10.
