Turns out businesses need to make more money than the spend to provide a service...
Color me shocked.
I was thinking the same thing.
That's the problem with "free" shite. People get hooked on it and then feel entitled to continually getting "free" shite.

Their reasoning was they weren't getting enough ad revenue from Google anymore

How the hell does somebody think this is a sound business decision?
I mean, that sounds like pretty sound reasoning. They're losing money, they have to do something. If people aren't interested in what they have to say then they'll end up fading away regardless.

Kinda like Newstar in Monroe. When your paper sucks that hard its hard to motivate people to pay for it.

Well, the problem here is that:
1. The Advocate ain't worth a shite in quality of their writers. But in order to get local news, you have to just deal with that part.
2. You've been able to log online and look for free for the past 20+ years.
3. There are far better publications that still offer free viewership of their online edition.
It's just kind of chickenshit that the Advocate is doing this. They may as well just close their doors.

This is why I only read the rouge collection these days

I make it a habit to provide my services for free. Sure I had to make this post from the free computers at the library, but I’m sure things will turn around any minute

Advertisers are paying the advocate to provide their news stories to us for "free"
The Advocate mobile site is really what was a deal breaker for me. It's gotten a little better but it used to be almost unusable with pages constantly reloaded with ads or crashing due to pop ups. They can charge all they want for their site but I won't be paying them a cent for their content

Seems I remember there being ads in print newspapers that people paid for once upon a time

Well yeah, then this whole internet fad took off shite, I can't get the advocate to stop giving me printed papers so I have to throw them away every morning
My point was that there are still revenue streams for the advocate, it's not like providing online content is 100% free

Pumping up their numbers. I save them for crawfish boils.

This is what their site looks like right now when I tried to pull up a news story. Just an all out advertising assault

I probably pay more monthly for those “free” computers at the library than I do for my own internet.

There sure is a lot of anger directed at a publication by posters who claim that publication’s content is worthless and they don’t read it anyway.

That you can't bypass an internet paywall with zero effort, says a lot more about you than it does them.

It’s all about perceived value, and for myself, the value is not high enough to pay for it.

OT is better for news
This. I don’t know how you guys do it, but the OT always beats the local news. Also, I rely on rds and some of the weather baws during hurricane season.
