yep, i mean its pretty easy for anyone but a moron to understand

if site traffic is down causing operating revenues to be too low, you dont start charging people to view your content, you make the content you have more interesting and relevent so viewership increases.

like with CNN they drove into a ditch and yet still have their foot on the gas instead of trying a new path

That's exactly the issue. Their ad revenue from online ads doesn't change much if they get 1 click or a million. So, while moving to a paywall might not get them any more revenue, it's not going to cost them any, either. It's all potential upside with no potential downside.

Aren't they the State Journal for publication of all notifications for the State and City of B.R. for that matter? I'd suspect they generate a hefty chunk of revenue from tax dollars for publishing all those notices. The old timers who still pay for it to be slung into their driveway are just icing on the cake at this point.

Their action is apparently one that models quite a few other print newspapers. All failing.

On a side note, it seems that one can't even access the daily Eedition version through the library system anymore either. It is just a heavily redacted text version of a few articles.

The standards of journalism today are so pathetic that most isn't worth reading for free, much less paying for it.

I agree.

Part of the reason that most journalism has basically become blogs and re-posts, is because they don't have any money for actual journalists.

If they had more revenue, they could get actual journalists.

It seems to be working for The Athletic and some larger newspapers.

WAFB and WBRZ report the same news and post the same stories on their websites, for free

Yeah, The Advocate's model only works if they actually improve their journalism and get actual news analysis you can't read anywhere else.

The tv stations are still making enough money on their tv advertising that they can afford to absorb the cost of online.

The future of news is in analysis and commentary, honestly. Even in a po-dunk market like Baton Rouge, there's enough eyes and ears out there to report the facts for free.

There sure is a lot of anger directed at a publication by posters who claim that publication’s content is worthless and they don’t read it anyway.

Yep.

I don't see how you can justify being mad with the idea their stuff is worthless. Those two statements are mutually exclusive.

This is what their site looks like right now when I tried to pull up a news story. Just an all out advertising assault

I had to turn off my ad blocker and check for myself. That is absolutely unbelievable. I can't even read the top headline without scrolling!

I wonder why that ad model isn't working.

Unfortunately nobody has cracked the MicroPayments system which is really what's needed here. Maybe you don't want to pay $10 a month for the paper but you might be willing to pay $.10 per article you read. The problem is it costs significantly more than $.10 to charge your credit card $.10.

It's not a hard concept. You just need to treat it like a toll tag. If you want to read, you have to buy a minimum number of credits at a time. The credits never expire.

This could push consolidation and sharing as well. So maybe these credits could be used not only on NOLA.com, but on any website owned by the same company that owns NOLA.com, etc.

You get what you pay for.

When you don't pay anything, the quality is going to be trash.

If you have a hard copy subscription does it come with an E-subscription as well. Might just piggy back off my parent's subscription if so.

Are you trying to pretend that ad-supported businesses aren't a thing? Or that every ad-supported content site is trash?

The last time I knew of this the T.P. got it back to their publication. It is a bidding war to see who gets it..
