The Neighborhood Walmart by me must be under new management because they run a tight ship at the self checkout the past few times I’ve been.

1-2 employees manning it the whole time, ushering people to the next available one, and they even appear to ring up your alcohol or whatever before the machine even prompts them.

Well considering most self checkout attendants have an IQ of 80 and always on their phone this doesn’t shock me one bit.

Subtle, “I’m smarter than a 17 year old kid working his first job” brag.

I was never properly trained to operate the self-checkout before they stuck me there...so I was bound to make a mistake or two.

In my lifetime of grocery shopping, I've noticed that when a cashier has checked me out, mistakes rarely happen in the shopper's favor.

Home Depot in BR has moved to people scanning for you. Last time I was there, the person scanning told me they were removing self-check out and going back to cashiers. I can see stores like home Depot and Lowe's doing this because of their high dollar items compared to Walmart.

Home Depot has already had to lock all of the electrical wiring and battery powered tools in order to keep them from walking away.

For posting about a hypothetical misdemeanor on a semi-anonymous website under a handle?

Wal-mart actually contacts the local PD with people who steal from them and the PD posts images on their Facebook page.

Meanwhile, Sams just sent notice that they will be removing the door person. They will be using technology to scan your buggy and determine how many items you are leaving with. I love Sams Scan and Go. I hope they don’t eff it up.

Home Depot in Lake Charles is trying to get away from self-checkout. The manager wants it gone due to theft but corporate is fighting him. Now he has people "assist" you in self-checkout defeating the purpose of it since they scan everything for you and only let you punch the screen to complete the transaction.

Started noticing this too at the Walmart in BR. I didn’t think anything of it as typically I’m too stubborn/stupid to get a cart so I have my hands full and just thought it was workers being courteous, but this makes a lot of sense too.

When self check was first rolled out, stores loved it and consumers hated it. Now, Stores hate it and "Consumers" love it...

One time I had 3 lemons and 3 limes in a bag and checked out for 6 limes, which were .10c cheaper each, solely because I didn't feel like looking up lemons on the machine.

I am guessing the value of the loss is less than the cost of cashiers.

So what will Sam's do when the AI indicates that someone is stealing an item?

I think that is no longer the case.

As someone mentioned, many Walmart stores are remodeling to allow more self checkout. The one nearest me just finished, and I’d estimate that half of cashier checkout has been eliminated.

If they go back now, it will be very expensive.

WalMart has receipt checkers though. Maybe that helps.

Esp true for those of us that buy fruit and vegetables. "Is this a cucumber or zucchini?" How do you not know that?!?!?

But the quoted "consumers" I was referring to were the thieves....

Here’s how this will go.

They will remove 10 self checkouts and replace it with one cashier.

Lines will grow longer.

People will get pissed off and because they can’t moderate behavior, take it out on the few cashiers that actually work.

This will push more people towards online shopping / delivery / pickup.

In-petson retail will continue to crumble.

The Walmart grocery by us has no cashier lines. It’s all self checkout. Moved so fast. Love it.
