Walmart too is opening more cashier isles and is said to be considering doing away with it on a national level or at least reducing it greatly.

Not here. WM in Prairieville just remodeled the whole self checkout area. It’s like 90% of the front area

My mom who worked at Walmart for years was telling me about the new tech they were in the process of rolling out at self checkouts. Apparently it uses facial recognition software in conjunction with other identifying information like your debit card transaction to build a profile. Items you fail to pay for are tracked and stored along with legit purchases. Once your theft reaches a certain dollar amount, that’s when they move forward with pressing charges using all of the information against you

So what will Sam's do when the AI indicates that someone is stealing an item?

I've noticed a trend at Sam's where patrons are swapping stickers on meat packaging. On more than one occasion I've noticed a very odd price, but on closer inspection, someone swapped the sticker from a more expensive meat, or more weight, to a lesser priced meat. I've taken several packages of pre-formed hamburger patties that had prime steak stickers, to the butcher. They pretty much just shrug their shoulders as there is nothing they can do.

I've heard of Target actually doing this, but more for people just straight up taking items and walking out of the store.

How would the kiosk or anyone be able to tell which items you failed to pay for?

I made away with something minor once on accident. It was so small it wasn't worth going back to the store for. Just a couple of dollars at most.

I’d imagine there is tech out there for that as well. Try dropping an item in a baggy at Publix without scanning it. It will prompt you to rescan the item. My guess is that everything has a weight associated with it so if you trigger the sensor in the bagging area without a corresponding item being scanned, the built in theft deterrent is activated.

Home Depot and Lowes both started putting attendants at self check out

I haven't been to a self checkout at any business that didn't have an attendant monitoring multiple checkout stations.

I personally prefer self checkout. Easy and quick when I have minimal items, but you also have options if you have a large amount of items. I absolutely hate getting stuck behind someone who decides to write a check last second, has 30 coupons or wants to argue over a 50 cent price difference.

I had a box of diapers at the bottom of the buggy that I forgot to scan. Checked out, went to the car, loaded everything up top, and saw the box. Went back inside and paid for them.

Having a conscious is a real bitch sometimes.

I give myself a 10% employee discount when using self checkout. If i'm buying 10 items, it don't scan the 10th (it's usually the most expensive).

You're doing it all wrong

Let's say you've scanned a few things and bagged them, and placed those bags back in your buggy. Let's say a couple of loose avocadoes that you hadn't paid for fall into the bag of items that you already paid for.

Or like other people have said, something is on the bottom rack and you forget to pick it up and scan it. How would the kiosk know? I mean, I'm sure if Wal Mart cared enough they could do inventory, see what's missing, and comb hours of security footage to see which one of the hundreds of shoppers walked out with a $15 pack of paper towels without paying, but I don't think that's worth their time either.

Walmart uses some fancy new AI thing I noticed last weekend. I accidentally put one 2 liter drink in the bag while scanning the other. It alerted clerk and showed a video of me putting the drink up to scanner and skipping it to put in bag. But I was in process of taking it out the bag and scanning it when it beeped.

The Clerk knew I wasn't stealing but they are getting better tech to catch checkout theft.
