The downside to this life is that expectations and competition are generally lowered when it comes to kids. If going to Ole Miss is generally the top tier of achievement at a school, then you're just limiting the worldview and suddenly Southern Miss is the good, average option. Contrast that with somewhere like in town Dallas, where Ole Miss is a bigtime fall back school, and you can just see how that is going to impact a kid's view of the world during formative years.

That’s more high school dependent than area dependent

MS Delta

The only Level 1 Trauma center in the State is in Jackson and only 3 Level 2 Trauma centers in Hattiesburg, Tupelo, & Gulfport. Your pretty much screwed if you don't live close to Jackson, Tupelo, Hattiesburg, Memphis or the Coast and need some serious medical help.

It would be a nightmare to grow up or start a family in Gunnison, Mississippi(where most of my family lives) right now.

But if you have money, are retired/established/a farmer, and enjoy the outdoors, it is a WONDERFUL place to live.

I imagine there are endless places like that around the south.

The ACS 1-year survey shows that the median family income for Mississippi was $55,937 in 2017.

So you're telling us life is good if you make double the median income in your area? Wow, huge if true.

Pretty sure the $107,000 is household income. You can find two $55,000 jobs in MS.

lulz

The Ivy League aint what it used to be. The ridiculously shitty professors are robbing parents of that once quality education. The absolutely only thing they might have going is networking. You end up rubbing elbows with some very wealthy, shitty kids. But even that isn't quite what it used to be. The leaders of out country carved out their own paths

You’re not wrong. There are a lot of similar places around this part of the country. Medium sized cities in the South all have nice areas and are affordable. There are a lot of positives if you have have a good job.

The problem is when you leave your neighborhood.

-There are a few good schools scattered around, but overall the school systems suck
-The weather sucks. Heat, humidity, tornadoes, hurricanes, but the winters are usually a positive.
-A nice and safe family outing to a park or local festival is rare because anything free is a magnet for the trashy element that surrounds your bubble.
-Crime infested areas surround you, and often creep into your neighborhood.
-Your kids will most likely have to relocate to another state to have a decent career.

No way I would live in Madison, MS for less than $500k/year. Even then, I would only grudgingly do so.

No offense, but if you have motivation at all, and at 40 you’re not knocking on the door of $100k, you need to reevaluate.
