If you aren't a complete loser - these places are a great place to live. My hometown of Madison, MS is a jewel in a middle of a turd.

New research from GOBankingRates says that Mississippi is the best place to move to live the American Dream, as long as you and your spouse make at least $107,000 a year.

“When you look at the economics of it, Mississippi is a good place to live,” said Ted Davis, a long time Mississippi resident.

The research factors in typical costs and figures that anyone living in Mississippi can "live the American dream," - that is nice house, nice car, healthcare, child care, etc. for $107,913 in combined household income.

Louisiana ranked 6th on the list at $120,813.

Hawaii was the most expensive at $206,775.

So it's better to be a rich person in a poor place than to be a poor person in a rich place?

Compelling stuff.

Trade offs

Good people, affordable, can afford the nicer things (relative to what's available)

The downside to this life is that expectations and competition are generally lowered when it comes to kids. If going to Ole Miss is generally the top tier of achievement at a school, then you're just limiting the worldview and suddenly Southern Miss is the good, average option. Contrast that with somewhere like in town Dallas, where Ole Miss is a bigtime fall back school, and you can just see how that is going to impact a kid's view of the world during formative years.

I'm not saying one is necessarily right, but...trade offs.

Well no shite it’s better to be a baller in a podunk poor state, but who wants to own a mansion surrounded by meth trailers?

This seems very subjective.

There's like 12 people making that much money in Mississippi.

Definitely helps if you can work remote or have the ability to travel for your job.

Dallas isn’t exactly the first place I think of when it comes to being an epicenter of culture or expansive world views

Housing market and job market are the first to collapse in these kinds of places.

My in-laws live in Madison on the Reservoir and it is awesome. We would get their house and have thought about living near them before they pass it on, but there just isn't a lot to do there and the risk is a lot higher that any company I work for or start would fail.

My wife and I combine to make 175k with no kids (yet) in lafayette. It’s been pretty damn great in terms of affordability

Dallas is a pretty "global" city man. They have tons of billionaires and everything you could want in a major city.

You must be some sort of genius. Nobody has every thought of or figured this out before

Dallas is a top 5ish metro in the country. Living in the city and going to good public or private schools is going to be set wildly different expectations than living in medium-town Mississippi or even the suburbs of Dallas.

Well yeah, the problem is there aren't that many decent paying jobs available in the majority of the state.

There are private schools in jackson that send kids to Ivy League schools every year and cost half of what the same education would cost in Dallas or Atlanta. St. Andrews for example, the average ACT of the class of 2019 was 30.

The coast is nice, but I’m not sure that level of income would have you living well.
