I have a wedding to attend (no pics of bride) this weekend and bought a charcoal colored sport coat. The plan was to wear a blue shirt (think of it as royal blue/navy) and the tie is a paisley with blue, silver, and grey. My wife’s dress is black with silver in it if that really matters.

Anyway, while being fitted for the coat, the lady (no pics and you definitely wouldnt want them) helping asked what color pants Id wear. I told her I was torn between navy pants or black pants. She immediately said that navy pants with some nice brown shoes would compliment the entire look. I was a little puzzled bc I was always under the impression you dont wear blown shoes with black/charcoal clothes. My wife (no pics) also thought it would be odd to have this combo but once I tried everything together it does look pretty nice.

So what says the OT guys who actually know how to dress nicely? Should I do the navy pants with dark brown shoes or the black pants with black shoes? Everywhere I look online seems to have mixed reviews on this.

Always brown shoes unless you have a black suit.

You can absolutely wear brown with charcoal.

Not sure on navy pants with a charcoal jacket though, especially with a navy shirt. I'd need to see it, but it doesn't look good in my mind.

The bigger question is: navy pants with a charcoal coat?

Well not always, but in the OP's case, yes brown shoes would look fine .

If you google colors of clothing or similar there is a website that has a chart of clothing in colors and shows what shoes go with what colors - it’s a great reference.

For my 52 trips around the sun, black, gray, or blue have been paired with black shoes. Seemingly overnight, about five or eight years ago, blue clothing with brown shoes have become the norm. I like both, to be honest.
But gray? Even with blue, it seems that black shoes would be more customary.

Now make the shirt navy and switch the colors of the pants and jacket.

shite, you're right. I misread that whole thing.

Here you go. Looks decent and brown would be fine instead of black, although there are better looks out there

It's actually a classic look when it comes to suits.

If it's a dark charcoal it may be odd with navy pants but navy-gray is fine and extremely common. If it's charcoal with some texture/variation it's probably fine. And gray+navy+brown shoes/belt is definitely done and the consensus is probably that this is far preferable to black pants and black shoes. In professional settings I rarely ever see black pants+black shoes (or black shoes at all).

Honestly the part that sounds the weakest to me is the shirt. If it's a standard light blue dress shirt - good. Solid colored shirts should be white or light blue unless you're some dandy who can get those pairings right. Especially with navy pants.
