You got answers already but non-white/light blue shirts almost always come off looking cheap (and usually are). Lighter shirts are easier to wear and look better. Nobody is going to care that much so don't sweat it, but you came looking for advice so plenty of people are giving you the modern conventional wisdom on this stuff.

You probably don't want to do gray and charcoal but it's possible. Truth is that some sport coats have patterns/colors/textures that you can throw on top of almost any pants, but hard to say w/o seeing.

Navy slacks+gray/charcoal jacket with a white/light blue dress shirt will be fine. Get the top half right and I suspect you can shrug off the jacket-pant combo even if it's not perfect.

Get a nice suit for weddings, funerals, etc. And for fricks sake go to a good tailor to fit it right. Holy frick! It’s like none of you mother frickers have any class at all. I know he is a homo but Neil Patrick Harris in “How I Met Your Mother” got it right when he said to “suit up!” Now I know a good sport coat can look killer but for weddings you wear a suit.
