For the past few months, I have kept my opinions about crime in Baton Rouge to myself, until today! I am so damn angry about the crime that has engulfed us here. Sure we are arresting people but apparently we can’t arrest them fast enough or keep them in jail long enough to keep them from killing our children. Imagine a parent getting that call today! Its unimaginable! That pay raise isn’t going to fix our problems in Baton Rouge. It’s going to take years to get BRPD anywhere close to full strength, if that’s even possible. You think pay is the issue or maybe it’s people just don’t want to do that job anymore? We have angry young people with chips on their shoulders, with no guidance and worse than that, no conscience about killing another person or a dozen other people. When are people going to get angry and demand changes to enforcement, prosecuting and sentencing? TAKE THE DAMN GLOVES OFF! We have bitched for years now about it getting worse and worse but what have we done? Let’s get off the TV shows, quit walking in neighborhoods giving away snowballs and let’s do a full court press every day. Let these thugs get very uncomfortable driving around in their cars spraying neighborhoods with bullets. I have had to tell parents that their child wasn’t ever coming home again and I can still hear the screams in my head decades later. I’m just a retired cop who policed this city for 32 years and now I’m an old man that would absolutely lose my mind if that was my grandchild in that mall or the parents of Allie Rice. A month from now this will be old news because the names will change but the killings won’t. Baton Rouge will still be outraged at the senseless killings but are we mad enough to do something about it? Good cops know what needs to be done to slow this down and it’s absolutely not social programs. We are at war and it’s time to fight back!

Representative Barbara Freiberg sponsored House Bill 124 that restructured the electoral map for the 19th JDC. The bill was signed into law by Gov. Landry in June. The map will go into effect for the upcoming October election that elects a candidate to fill a vacant seat.

“I had some constituents come to me and point out to me that it had been over 30 years since the 19th JDC lines have been determined,” Freiberg said.

The old map was divided into three, but the newly redrawn map is divided into two sections.

"So the idea that I had was to divide the districts into two pieces to have one judge who will be at large and you would elect 7 from each of the two districts," said Freiberg.

The new map changes the racial dynamic for the two districts. Black voters make up 72 percent of the registered voters in Section One, and in Section Two, 72 percent of the registered voters are white.
