With U.S. gun sales soaring during the coronavirus pandemic, a group of 15 Senate Democrats is introducing legislation calling for new restrictions on untraceable “ghost guns.”

Made using gun kits or by 3D printing — and sometimes referred to as “80 percent guns” because they haven’t reached a level of manufacturing that meets the legal definition of a firearm — these weapons have no serial numbers, as compared to guns sold by federally licensed gun dealers. There’s also no requirement to obtain a federal background check for anyone who buys a kit and builds such a weapon, and they can be sold by unlicensed dealers.

Led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, these Senate Democrats — who include Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York — want to require that all guns sold in the United States after Jan. 1, 2022, can be traced by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

How does the OT feel about this?

It's to late for that. Soon we will have widespread, cheap access to 3d metal printing.

Then people can make their own .50 cal Browning at home.

Doesn't matter what I think. If Democrats are for it, reason stands against it.

Edit:. I didn't read the 80% lower part. My bad.

Legally, I get why something needs to be put into writing on people 3D printing untraceable guns at home. It’s not going to stop it though

It's not true, first of all. When you buy a lower receiver it is treated like a firearm purchase and must be sold through a FFL
Not an 80% complete receiver and with a jig, a router and an afternoon it can be made 100%. I hope it doesn't pass but there will be a shortage of 80% receivers and machining jigs now.

You can buy 80% lowers with no checks because, technically, they aren't firearms. Somewhere, we have to say "OK, that isn't a firearm. Now this over here is a firearm."

Regulating 80% lowers only leads to needing a background check on triggers, grips, and barrels....where does it stop? Are we really going to perform background checks on scope rails?

This is just utter nonsense as is the term "Ghost Gun". They just want control.

It's a feel good policy that won't have any impact on crime. Kind of like closing the "gun show loophole"

Jesus Christ. Your mindset is the perfect example of what is wrong with our political system.

The people win when all sides do not otherwise we would live in a dictatorship.

Exactly. The article keeps calling it a weapon. It is a chunk of metal with a few machined features.

Like you said, it is debating at what point to call something a firearm.

That's odd. I never had to register any of my firearms.
