I think the allure of those towns for some is the ability to do some activities for the kids and get out in nature. Sorry, not matter how much I like hiking, my kids are not gonna wanna do that all day.
100%.
My kids (9, 7, and 3) are good travelers and they will do the hiking thing and be happy, but multiple days of that would get old for them. Got to throw them a bone with a mountain coaster or Hillybilly Putt Putt with some Smoky Mountain Fudge once in a while. Just like you said it's a good compromise of nature/fun for families with young kids.
But the OP is definitely right in that it is pretty trashy overall.

Any place that’s well known tends to be trashy now days. If a place is overpriced, likely overrated.

Best described as a giant celebration station or bourbon street for kids.

It’s like if Panama City Beach and Shoney’s moved into the mountains and had a kid.

Take the road from Townsend to Pigeon Forge at night and midway turn off your headlights for as long as you can. They won't be off long!
We used to do a full moon bike ride from Maryville to Cades Cove. One way gravel road but since it’s closed at night we didn’t have to worry about it. Not sure if it was legal though.

A couple of years ago me nd a few friends went to Gatlinburg for a long weekend. Spent all day in the woods hiking and good food and drinks at night. Stopped by the aquarium on the way out. Fun weekend. It is what you make it I guess.

All true, but Paula Deens restaurant and Smoky Mountain Knife Works are worth it.

What do you have against pancake restaurants?

If you grow up you'll expect the expected.

That whole area of Appalachia is just God-awful in more than just that way.

I’m betting a good many locals here absolutely hate Dolly Parton for destroying this area.
Dolly Parton is an American hero!
I live in Knoxville and like Pigeon Forge and Gatinburg. It's just like Orange Beach but in the mountains. I've rented cabins down there a few times and met up with friends multiple other times. Always enjoyed myself.
